They Humiliated the Poor Cleaner… Until the CEO Walked In

Chapter 2

Ethan walked directly toward her.

The ballroom became so quiet Clara could hear the soft hum of the air-conditioning.

She hadn’t expected him to know her.

Not like this.

Not in front of everyone.

“Ethan,” she whispered.

Vanessa frowned.

“Mr. Cole, I was just—”

“Stop.”

One word.

The room froze.

Ethan never looked at Vanessa.

His attention remained on Clara.

“What are you doing here?”

Clara glanced around.

“Working.”

“Here?”

“Yes.”

His jaw tightened.

“Why?”

She swallowed.

“Because I needed a job.”

He studied her face.

Twelve years had changed her.

But he remembered.

The girl standing outside a courthouse.

The seventeen-year-old who had cried when her father was arrested.

The girl Ethan had seen once from across the street while visiting his own father.

They had never spoken.

Yet he remembered her.

Her father, Michael Bennett, had once been one of the company’s top financial analysts.

Then he’d been accused of embezzling millions.

He had disappeared before trial.

Officially, he had fled the country.

Unofficially, nobody knew.

Ethan’s father had been chairman of Halston International at the time.

And Ethan had always suspected something was wrong.

Clara looked at him.

“You remember me.”

“I do.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You know her?”

Ethan finally looked at her.

“Yes.”

Vanessa laughed awkwardly.

“She’s just the cleaner.”

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Ethan’s eyes hardened.

“She’s a person.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“I didn’t mean—”

“You knew exactly what you meant.”

Clara felt embarrassed.

She quietly stepped backward.

“I should get back to work.”

Ethan stopped her.

“No.”

He looked at the manager.

“Why is she working here?”

The manager hurried forward.

“She was assigned through a temporary agency.”

“Who approved it?”

The manager hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

Ethan glanced at the cleaning cart.

Then at Clara.

“What are you looking for?”

Clara’s heart raced.

“Nothing.”

He knew she was lying.

Before he could press, a senior executive approached.

“Mr. Cole, the board meeting starts in five minutes.”

Ethan nodded.

“Take care of it.”

He looked at Clara one last time.

“We need to talk.”

Then he walked away.

The moment he disappeared through the doors, Vanessa turned to Clara.

“You’d better enjoy your five minutes.”

Clara didn’t answer.

Vanessa leaned closer.

“People like you don’t belong in this building.”

She walked away.

Clara waited until everyone had left.

Then she reached into her pocket.

The USB drive was still there.

She hurried into a supply closet and locked the door.

Her hands shook as she inserted the drive into an old laptop.

Most folders were encrypted.

One wasn’t.

ORION — PAYMENT RECORDS

She opened it.

Her breath caught.

There were bank transfers.

Shell companies.

Names.

Dates.

And one name she knew.

Her father’s.

But the transaction beside it was dated eleven months after he supposedly disappeared.

Impossible.

Clara scrolled further.

Then she saw another name.

Richard Cole.

Ethan’s father.

And beneath it was a handwritten note attached to the file:

If Michael Bennett talks, Richard goes down too.

Clara stared at the screen.

Her father’s disappearance hadn’t been about embezzlement.

He had known something.

Something powerful enough to destroy the company.

And someone had spent twelve years making sure the truth stayed buried.
