My Husband Slapped Me At The Hospital… Then My Father Did Something Nobody Expected. Chapt
Chapter 1
The slap echoed through the hospital corridor.
For one terrible second, nobody moved.
Emily Carter stood frozen beside the nurses’ station, one hand pressed against her cheek, her eyes fixed on the man who had just struck her.
Her husband, Ryan, was breathing hard.
“You embarrassed me,” he hissed.
A nurse dropped a stack of papers.
Someone farther down the hallway whispered, “Oh my God.”
Emily could barely hear them.
She could hear only the ringing inside her own ears.
Twenty minutes earlier, she had been sitting beside her father’s hospital bed, holding his hand while doctors explained that his condition had suddenly worsened.
Her father, Thomas Carter, had suffered a massive heart attack that morning.
The doctors had managed to stabilize him, but his condition remained critical.
Emily had spent six hours beside him.
Ryan had arrived late.
Very late.
And instead of asking whether her father was alive, his first words had been about money.
“Did you sign the paperwork?”
Emily had stared at him.
“What paperwork?”
“The hospital authorization. Your father needs surgery. Someone has to make a decision.”
“The doctors said they’re still evaluating him.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“You always do this.”
“Do what?”
“Make everything complicated.”
Emily looked toward her father’s room.
Her father had been a proud man all his life. He had built a small construction company from nothing and raised Emily after her mother died when she was twelve.
Now he lay unconscious beneath white sheets.
And Ryan was worried about paperwork.
“I’m not discussing this here,” Emily whispered.
Ryan stepped closer.
“You promised me the house.”
Emily’s heart sank.
There it was.
The real reason.
Her father owned a large property outside Chicago. It was worth several million dollars after years of development around it.
Ryan had known about that property since before their wedding.
Emily had always believed he loved her.
At least, she had wanted to believe it.
But lately, his questions had become impossible to ignore.
When would her father transfer the property?
What would happen if Thomas died?
Had Emily checked the will?
Was the property in her name?
Tonight, with her father unconscious, Ryan had finally stopped pretending.
“My father is still alive,” Emily said.
“I know.”
“Then why are you talking about his property?”
“Because someone needs to think about the future.”
“You mean your future.”
Ryan’s expression hardened.
“You’ve become incredibly ungrateful.”
Emily shook her head.
“I’ve been here all day.”
“So have I.”
“No, Ryan. You haven’t.”
That was when he slapped her.
The sound traveled through the corridor.
Emily touched her cheek.
Her eyes filled with tears, but she refused to cry.
Ryan looked almost surprised by what he had done.
Then his expression changed.
“You made me do that.”
A nurse immediately stepped between them.
“Sir, you need to leave.”
“This is my wife.”
“And that does not give you permission to hit her.”
Ryan pointed at Emily.
“She knows what she did.”
Emily couldn’t answer.
Then a voice came from behind her.
Quiet.
Weak.
But unmistakably familiar.
“Get… away… from my daughter.”
Emily turned.
Her father’s hospital room door was open.
Thomas Carter was awake.
The monitor beside him was beeping rapidly.
His eyes were barely open.
But he was looking directly at Ryan.
And every person in that hallway suddenly understood something.
The man who had been lying unconscious for hours had seen everything.
Ryan’s face went pale.
Thomas slowly lifted one trembling hand.
“Call my lawyer.”
Emily stared at him.
“Dad?”
Thomas looked at her.
And despite the pain in his face, there was something else in his eyes.
Determination.
“It’s time,” he whispered.
“Time they learned who my daughter really is.”
