They Humiliated the Poor Cleaner… Until the CEO Walked In

Chapter 3

Clara barely slept.

The next morning, she returned to the hotel as if nothing had happened.

Her secret was hidden inside a small envelope sewn into the lining of her uniform.

She couldn’t trust the agency.

She couldn’t trust the hotel.

And she wasn’t sure she could trust Ethan.

The problem was that she wanted to.

She remembered him from years ago.

Back then, Ethan had been twenty-two.

He had stood outside the courthouse where her father’s case was being discussed.

She had been sitting alone on a bench.

He had looked at her for several seconds.

Then he had walked away.

She had always wondered why.

Now she knew.

He had been there with his father.

And perhaps he’d seen more than he’d ever admitted.

At ten that morning, Clara was cleaning the executive floor when two men entered the hallway.

They were discussing a shipment.

“Move it tonight.”

“What about the Orion files?”

“Still missing.”

Clara lowered her head and continued wiping the windows.

One of the men looked at her.

“She’s just cleaning.”

They walked away.

Clara waited.

Then she heard another voice.

“You’re smarter than you look.”

She turned.

Ethan stood behind her.

Clara nearly dropped the cloth.

“You scared me.”

“Good.”

He glanced down the corridor.

“Walk with me.”

She hesitated.

“Why?”

“Because the man you just heard talking works for me.”

Clara’s heart pounded.

“What do you know?”

“Enough to know my company has a problem.”

They entered an empty conference room.

Ethan closed the door.

“Tell me the truth.”

Clara looked at him.

“I found something.”

“What?”

She pulled out the USB drive.

His expression changed.

“Where did you get this?”

“Last night.”

She explained what happened.

Ethan read the label.

His face became colder.

“Where is the file?”

“I accessed it.”

“What did you see?”

“Your father’s name.”

Silence.

Ethan looked away.

“My father died six years ago.”

“I know.”

“But this file is twelve years old.”

“I know.”

“And you’re telling me someone was still moving money under his name.”

“Yes.”

Ethan held out his hand.

She gave him the drive.

He inserted it into his laptop.

As the files appeared, he stared in disbelief.

“There are hundreds of transfers.”

Clara nodded.

“Your father isn’t the only one.”

Ethan scrolled.

Board members.

Executives.

Politicians.

Private companies.

Clara watched his face.

“Do you believe me?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he looked at her.

“I believe the evidence.”

She exhaled.

Ethan shut the laptop.

“You shouldn’t have this.”

“I know.”

“You could be in danger.”

“I already am.”

He stared at her.

“Why did you come here?”

Clara hesitated.

“Because I think my father is alive.”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

“There’s a transfer dated eleven months after he vanished.”

Ethan’s voice dropped.

“Then we need to find him.”

Clara shook her head.

“What if someone doesn’t want us to?”

Ethan looked at her.

“They’ve already tried to bury the truth once.”

He stood.

“They won’t get a second chance.”

Clara stared at him.

For the first time in twelve years, someone was standing beside her.

Not because she was useful.

Not because she was rich.

Not because she could offer anything.

But because he believed she deserved the truth.
