They Humiliated the Poor Cleaner… Until the CEO Walked In

Chapter 12

Clara couldn’t speak for several minutes.

Her mother had been dead for thirteen years.

Everyone had seen the funeral.

The death certificate existed.

The medical records existed.

Yet the photograph showed her alive.

Ethan sat beside Clara.

“We’ll find out what happened.”

They traveled to Paris.

The address connected to the photograph led to a small apartment building.

The apartment was empty.

But the landlord remembered the woman.

“She lived here under another name.”

“What was the name?” Clara asked.

The landlord thought.

“Elena Brooks.”

Clara recognized nothing.

Then he handed her a box.

“He told me to give this to you if you ever came.”

“Who?”

“Your mother.”

Inside was a letter.

Clara opened it.

My dearest Clara,

If you are reading this, I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you.

I left because I was told they would kill you if I stayed.

Clara’s tears fell onto the paper.

Her mother explained that Victor had threatened her.

She had been forced to disappear after Michael escaped.

She had spent years hiding under another identity.

She never contacted Clara because Victor was watching.

At the bottom of the letter was one sentence:

I am sorry I chose distance over your memories.

Clara broke down.

Ethan held her.

She didn’t try to hide the tears.

For years, she had believed her mother abandoned her.

Now she understood.

Her mother had been trying to protect her.

They eventually found her.

She was alive.

Older.

Fragile.

But alive.

The reunion was painful and beautiful.

Clara hugged her mother so tightly neither woman could speak.

When they finally separated, her mother looked at Ethan.

“You must be Richard’s son.”

Ethan nodded.

She smiled sadly.

“Your father tried to save us all.”

Ethan looked at Clara.

“He did.”

The family truth was finally complete.

Richard.

Michael.

Clara’s mother.

All had been caught in the same web.

Victor had only been the final link.

Months later, the trial began.

Victor was convicted on multiple charges.

Halston International survived.

Ethan rebuilt the company.

And Clara became something nobody expected.

She returned to school.

Studied investigative finance.

Then joined Ethan’s reform division.

She didn’t become a cleaner again.

Not because cleaning was beneath her.

But because she had discovered something more important.

Her story could help expose corruption before another family disappeared.

One morning, Ethan walked into her office.

“Coffee?”

She looked up.

“You remembered.”

“I remember everything about you.”

She smiled.

“That’s dangerous.”

He leaned against the desk.

“Probably.”

Clara looked at him.

“What happens now?”

Ethan smiled.

“Now we stop running.”
