THE BILLIONAIRE TRIED TO FIRE HER—THEN DISCOVERED HER SHOCKING SECRET

Chapter 10

Richard was found three weeks later.

He had been hiding in an abandoned property once owned by Blackwell Holdings.

Federal agents arrested him without resistance.

When Adrian visited him in prison, Richard smiled.

“You came.”

“I wanted answers.”

“You already know.”

“Why did you threaten Emma?”

Richard shrugged.

“She was supposed to remain hidden.”

“She was your niece.”

“That made her dangerous.”

“You’ve destroyed lives.”

Richard leaned forward.

“Your father destroyed them first.”

Adrian frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“He built the empire with secrets.”

“That doesn’t excuse you.”

Richard laughed.

“Your father knew what I was doing.”

Adrian froze.

“Then why didn’t he stop you?”

“Because he needed me.”

“For what?”

Richard leaned back.

“To move money.”

Adrian stared.

“What money?”

Richard smiled.

“The first fortune.”

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

His father had started Blackwell Holdings with almost no capital.

Everyone believed it was because of one successful real-estate deal.

Richard told a different story.

“There was another investor.”

“Who?”

“A private syndicate.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“Name.”

“Your father never told you.”

“Why?”

“Because the money was dirty.”

Adrian sat back.

Richard continued.

“The syndicate disappeared after your father built the company.”

“Where did the money come from?”

“Government contracts.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Illegal?”

“Not exactly.”

“Then what?”

“Bribes.”

Silence.

Adrian left the prison stunned.

He called Emma.

“We need to talk.”

She came immediately.

“What happened?”

Adrian explained.

Emma listened.

“Do you believe him?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then we verify.”

They began digging into Blackwell Holdings’ founding records.

The original investments were difficult to trace.

But one name kept appearing.

A private bank in Switzerland.

An account established twenty-five years earlier.

The beneficial owner was listed as an unnamed trust.

Emma studied the records.

“Look at the creation date.”

Adrian did.

It was the same month Emma was born.

“That can’t be coincidence.”

Emma traced the trust.

It had been funded by payments from a construction company connected to the old government contracts.

Then she found a handwritten note in their father’s archive.

Laura,

The money has been returned.

Richard believes the account remains hidden.

It doesn’t.

I have moved it into a trust for Emma.

Adrian stared.

“So the secret trust wasn’t just protection.”

“No.”

“It contained the original dirty money.”

Emma’s face went pale.

“That money isn’t mine.”

“No.”

“Then what happens?”

“We return it.”

“All of it?”

“Yes.”

Adrian nodded.

It would cost them millions.

Maybe more.

But Emma looked at him.

“Do it.”

Adrian agreed.

For the first time, the two siblings stood on the same side of a family secret.

Not protecting wealth.

Destroying the parts that were built on lies.

They transferred the funds to a federal restitution account.

Publicly disclosed the history.

Accepted the financial consequences.

The company took a major hit.

But it survived.

And its reputation began to recover.

Emma thought about the woman she had been before.

She had joined Blackwell Holdings needing a job.

She had left with something she never expected.

A brother.

A family.

And a truth that had been hidden from her since birth.

One afternoon, Adrian asked her to meet him on the rooftop.

“You know,” he said, “when I first hired you, I thought you were too stubborn.”

Emma laughed.

“And when you fired me, you thought I was dangerous.”

“You were.”

“To you?”

“To the people lying to me.”

She smiled.

“Better.”

He looked at the city.

“Do you regret finding out?”

Emma was silent.

Then shook her head.

“No.”

“Even with everything?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I spent my life wondering why certain things didn’t make sense.”

She looked at him.

“Now they do.”

Adrian smiled.

“I have a sister.”

Emma laughed.

“I have a brother.”

Then she became serious.

“But don’t expect me to call you every day.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“Good.”

“Maybe twice a week.”

“Absolutely not.”

He laughed.

For the first time in years, Adrian felt something he’d forgotten.

Family.

Real family.

Not a last name.

Not an inheritance.

Not a corporation.

A person who knew the worst parts of your story and stayed anyway.
