Adrian walked into the room.
“You’re early.”
“You’re late.”
He laughed.
“Still doing that?”
“Always.”
The board meeting began.
A major acquisition was under discussion.
The numbers looked good.
Too good.
Emma raised one question.
“Where did these projections come from?”
The CFO answered.
“Our modeling team.”
“Independent?”
“Yes.”
Emma looked at the screen.
“Then why do they use the same assumptions as the seller’s projections?”
Silence.
Adrian looked at the CFO.
“Explain.”
The CFO stumbled.
Emma closed the file.
“Stop the acquisition.”
The board stared.
One director protested.
“We’ve already spent millions.”
Emma answered,

Adrian nodded.
“Stop the deal.”
The meeting ended.
Outside, Adrian caught up with her.
“You enjoyed that.”
“A little.”
He laughed.
Then he became serious.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For protecting the company.”
She shook her head.
“For protecting us.”
He smiled.
That evening, they returned to their father’s old house.
It had been converted into the foundation’s headquarters.
The study remained untouched.
Emma looked at the old safe.
“Do you ever wonder what would have happened if Dad had told everyone the truth?”
“Yes.”
“What do you think?”
“I think I might have met you twenty years earlier.”
She smiled.
“Maybe.”
“Would we have gotten along?”
“No.”
He laughed.
“Definitely.”
They found an old family photograph.
Their father stood between them in the center.
Emma touched the picture.
“He knew.”
“Yes.”
“He would have wanted us together.”
Adrian nodded.
“I think so.”
They sat together.
Outside, Sophie was laughing with the foundation volunteers.

“You’d still be arrogant.”
“Probably.”
She laughed.
Then Sophie entered.
“Mom!”
“What?”
“Uncle Adrian said I could choose a new laptop.”
Emma looked at him.
“You did what?”
Adrian froze.
“She needs one.”
“You’re spoiling her.”
“I’m her uncle.”
“Exactly.”
Sophie grinned.
“Can I?”
Emma sighed.
“One laptop.”
Sophie cheered.
Adrian smiled.
Emma pointed at him.
“You’re responsible for this.”
“I accept.”
She shook her head.
Then smiled.
