THE BILLIONAIRE TRIED TO FIRE HER—THEN DISCOVERED HER SHOCKING SECRET
Chapter 11
The board had one final problem.
Emma.
Some directors believed she should receive a formal executive position.
Others believed her family connection created a conflict of interest.
Adrian refused to force the issue.
“Let her decide.”
At the next board meeting, Emma walked into the room where she had once been fired.
She stood at the same table.
The same executives stared at her.
The CFO was gone.
Several directors had resigned.
The room felt different.
Adrian spoke first.
“Emma is not here because she’s my sister.”
Emma looked at him.
“She is here because she earned the right to be.”
One director asked,
“Then what role does she want?”
Emma stood.
“I don’t want an executive title.”
Silence.
“I want an independent oversight position.”
The directors stared.
Emma continued.
“Blackwell Holdings needs a system where no CEO, CFO, or board member can hide financial misconduct.”
Adrian smiled.
“That was exactly why I brought her back.”
The board approved her proposal.
Emma became chair of the company’s newly independent ethics and financial oversight committee.
She had no operational authority.
No bonus tied to profits.
No hidden conflicts.
Her only responsibility was protecting the integrity of the company.
And for the first time, Adrian had someone who could tell him no.
One month later, the company’s stock stabilized.
Employees returned to work.
Shareholders stopped demanding Adrian’s resignation.
The scandal remained part of the company’s history.
But they were rebuilding.
Emma focused on her daughter.
Sophie was happier.
School had returned to normal.
The media had stopped following them.
One Friday evening, Adrian visited Emma’s home.
He brought pizza.
Sophie opened the door.
“You’re late.”
Adrian laughed.
“I’m not sure why I’m being judged.”
“Mom said dinner at six.”
“It’s six fifteen.”
“That’s late.”
Emma walked into the hallway.
“She gets that from me.”
Adrian looked at her.
“I brought dessert.”
Sophie immediately smiled.
“Okay. You’re forgiven.”
Adrian entered.
The house was modest.
Warm.
Nothing like his mansion.
He liked it.
They ate at the kitchen table.
Sophie asked questions about Blackwell Holdings.
“Is Mom really your sister?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Adrian explained gently.
She nodded.
“So you’re my uncle.”
“Yes.”
“Are you rich?”
Emma closed her eyes.
“Sophie.”
Adrian laughed.
“Yes.”
“How rich?”
“Very.”
“Can I have a horse?”
“No.”
She frowned.
“Then what’s the point?”
Everyone laughed.
Later, when Sophie went upstairs, Emma and Adrian sat on the porch.
“You know,” Adrian said, “I’ve spent years surrounded by people who wanted something from me.”
Emma looked at him.
“What do you want from me?”
He smiled.
“Nothing.”
“Good answer.”
“You’re still difficult.”
She laughed.
“You’re still arrogant.”
“Fair.”
They sat quietly.
Then Emma’s phone rang.
A message from an unknown number.
This isn’t over.
Attached was a document.
Emma opened it.
The document was old.
Very old.
It was her original birth certificate.
And under the section for father, there was a name neither she nor Adrian had seen before.
Adrian read it.
His expression changed.
“That’s impossible.”
“Who is he?”
Adrian shook his head.
“My father’s business partner.”
“Alive?”
“I don’t know.”
Emma stared at the document.
The family secret had just opened another door.
And this time, the person behind it wasn’t connected to Richard.
It was connected to the very beginning of Blackwell Holdings.
