THE BILLIONAIRE TRIED TO FIRE HER—THEN DISCOVERED HER SHOCKING SECRET

Chapter 8

They didn’t go to the estate alone.

Federal agents surrounded the property.

Emma and Adrian entered through the main hall.

Everything was quiet.

Too quiet.

Then they found a hidden room beneath the study.

Inside was a wall covered with photographs.

Their father.

Richard.

Laura.

Emma as a baby.

Adrian as a child.

Emma stepped closer.

“This is my entire life.”

Adrian looked at the photographs.

Someone had been tracking her for years.

School pictures.

Graduation.

Marriage.

Sophie.

Emma felt sick.

“Why?”

A federal investigator found a locked cabinet.

Inside were files.

Richard had kept records on everyone.

Adrian.

Emma.

Their father.

And several executives.

One file was marked:

CARTER TRUST — CONTROL PLAN.

Emma opened it.

The documents showed that Richard had planned to control Emma’s inheritance if she ever discovered her identity.

He had created shell companies.

Moved money.

Used her trust as collateral.

And he had tried to ensure that nobody inside Blackwell Holdings knew Emma existed.

Until she joined the company.

Adrian stared at the documents.

“He couldn’t control you.”

Emma shook her head.

“So he tried to destroy me.”

“Exactly.”

Then they found another file.

This one contained internal Blackwell correspondence.

Richard had been manipulating acquisitions for years.

He planned to bankrupt Blackwell Holdings through hidden debt, buy the company’s assets cheaply, and transfer ownership to shell corporations.

Adrian’s CFO was involved.

Several board members were involved.

But Richard needed one final step.

Adrian removed.

He looked at Emma.

“He wants me to resign.”

“Then he takes control.”

“And I sign the company over?”

“Yes.”

Emma shook her head.

“Not unless you’re forced.”

A voice came from the doorway.

“That’s exactly what will happen.”

Richard Blackwell stood there.

Older than the photograph.

But still intimidating.

Federal agents raised weapons.

Richard smiled.

“You always were dramatic.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“You destroyed our family.”

“No.”

Richard looked at Emma.

“I protected it.”

Emma’s face hardened.

“You erased me.”

“You were a threat.”

“To what?”

“To the inheritance.”

Adrian shook his head.

“You stole from your own family.”

Richard laughed.

“Your father built this empire because of me.”

“He built it despite you.”

Richard looked at Emma.

“Your mother understood.”

Emma froze.

“You knew her.”

“I paid her.”

“For what?”

“To leave.”

Emma’s voice trembled.

“Why?”

“Because your father wanted to recognize you.”

She stared.

“And you stopped him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if you existed, Adrian wouldn’t inherit everything.”

Silence.

Emma felt no sadness.

Only anger.

“You ruined an innocent woman’s life.”

Richard shrugged.

“Business.”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“Cowardice.”

Richard’s expression changed.

Then he pulled out a phone.

“You think this ends here?”

Adrian looked at him.

“What did you do?”

Richard smiled.

“Your company will collapse tomorrow.”

“Why?”

“Because I already triggered the debt covenants.”

Adrian froze.

Richard continued.

“By morning, Blackwell Holdings will be technically insolvent.”

Emma looked at Adrian.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Richard has control unless we stop him.”

The federal agents moved to arrest Richard.

But before they could, he smiled again.

“You’re too late.”

Then his phone rang.

One sentence.

“It’s done.”
