Ethan stared at Richard.
“I think you’ve misunderstood.”
“I haven’t.”
“I’m not being paid to date your daughter.”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Then why are you here?”
“Because she asked me.”
“She’s impulsive.”
“She seems capable of making her own decisions.”
Richard stepped closer.
“You don’t know my daughter.”
“No.”
Ethan nodded.
“But I know what it looks like when someone doesn’t trust their own family.”
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“What did you say?”
“Nothing.”
Richard looked him over.
“What’s your profession?”
“Construction management.”
“Income?”
Ethan smiled.
“Enough.”
“Enough for what?”
“To take care of my daughter.”
Richard’s expression changed.
“You have a child?”
“Yes.”
“Are you married?”
“No.”
“Divorced?”
“Yes.”
Richard folded his arms.
“You’re not what I expected.”
Ethan smiled.
“That’s becoming a theme.”
Richard walked away.
Ethan returned to Olivia.
“What did he say?”
“He threatened you.”
“Your family is welcoming.”
She laughed.
“I warned you.”
“Your father thinks I’m after your money.”
Olivia looked down.
“That happens.”
Ethan noticed something.
“You didn’t deny it.”
“Because he has reason to worry.”
“Why?”
She hesitated.
“Because money has changed people around me.”
Before Ethan could respond, Lily appeared.
“Daddy!”
Ethan turned.
She ran into his arms.
Olivia smiled.
“This is Lily?”
Lily nodded.
“Are you the fake girlfriend?”
Ethan nearly dropped his drink.
“Lily!”
Olivia burst out laughing.
“Yes.”
Lily looked her up and down.
“Okay.”
Ethan stared.
“What does that mean?”
“I like her.”
Olivia smiled.
“Good.”
Lily looked at Ethan.
“Can we keep her?”
“That’s not how dating works.”
“Pretend dating.”
Olivia laughed again.
And for the first time that weekend, Ethan wondered whether pretending might become harder than he expected.
