Monday arrived too quickly.
Ethan returned to work.
His supervisor was waiting.
“There was a complaint.”
“What kind?”
“Conflict of interest.”
Ethan frowned.
“From whom?”
“We can’t say.”
Then the company attorney entered.
“We’ve been informed that you’re involved with Olivia Bennett.”
Ethan stared.
“So?”
“She has interests in several companies that do business with us.”
Ethan understood.
Someone had used Olivia’s identity to threaten his career.
“I didn’t know.”
“We know.”
“Then why am I here?”
The attorney hesitated.
“We’re placing you on leave.”
Ethan clenched his jaw.
When he left, Olivia was waiting outside.
“How did you know?”
“My assistant called.”
Ethan shook his head.
“This is exactly what I didn’t want.”
“I can fix it.”
“No.”
She looked hurt.
“I can.”
“I don’t want you fixing my life.”
“I want to help.”
“Then help me by not making it worse.”
Olivia stepped back.
He immediately regretted his tone.
“I didn’t mean—”
“I understand.”
She turned.
“Olivia.”
She stopped.
“I just need to handle this myself.”
She nodded.
“Okay.”
That night, Ethan sat at home with Lily.
She noticed he was quiet.
“Did the billionaire fire you?”
He laughed.
“No.”
“Then why are you sad?”
“Because I may have hurt someone.”
“Olivia?”
He nodded.
Lily thought for a moment.
“Then say sorry.”
Ethan smiled.
“You make everything sound easy.”
“It usually is.”
He called Olivia.
She answered immediately.
“Hello?”
“I’m sorry.”
Silence.
“I shouldn’t have pushed you away.”
“I understand why.”
“No. I was scared.”
“Of me?”
“Of what your money could do to my life.”
She was quiet.
Then said:
“I don’t want to buy your life.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“I want to share it.”
