Single Dad Agreed to Pretend to Be Her Date for One Weekend—Then Discovered She Was a Millionaire

Chapter 8

That afternoon, Ethan received a call from his employer.

His supervisor sounded nervous.

“Ethan, can you come in Monday?”

“Why?”

“We need to discuss your position.”

Ethan frowned.

“What happened?”

“I can’t discuss it over the phone.”

The call ended.

Olivia noticed his expression.

“What is it?”

“My boss wants to see me.”

“Is everything okay?”

“I don’t know.”

She looked at him.

“Could it be because of me?”

“What?”

“Your company may have discovered who I am.”

Ethan shook his head.

“That wouldn’t matter.”

“It might.”

She looked worried.

“People around me sometimes use money to influence things.”

Ethan stared at her.

“Did you tell anyone about me?”

“No.”

“Then we’ll deal with it Monday.”

She nodded.

That evening, they attended another family event.

This time, Ethan noticed the atmosphere had changed.

People were watching him differently.

Some were whispering.

One man approached.

“I hear you’re very close to Olivia.”

Ethan smiled.

“We’re getting to know each other.”

The man laughed.

“Do you know how much she’s worth?”

“No.”

“More than you’ll ever earn.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Probably.”

“So what are you after?”

“Nothing.”

The man laughed.

“Everyone wants something.”

Ethan looked toward Olivia.

“She doesn’t owe me anything.”

The man shook his head.

“You’re either a fool or a liar.”

Ethan smiled.

“Maybe both.”

Later, Olivia found him outside.

“I’m sorry.”

“Stop apologizing.”

She looked at him.

“People will always judge.”

“Let them.”

“You don’t understand.”

“I do.”

Ethan looked at her.

“People judged me because I was a divorced father with an ordinary job.”

He smiled.

“I learned a long time ago that people see what they expect.”

Olivia stepped closer.

“And what do you see?”

Ethan looked into her eyes.

“You.”

Neither spoke.

Then she kissed him.

This time, there was no family watching.

No contract.

No pretending.

And neither of them pulled away.
