Adrian finally admitted the truth.

He wanted to stay in London.

Not for another year.

Maybe for several.

“There is a project here.”

Sophie sat silently.

“You knew I wanted this.”

“I know.”

“You wanted me to wait.”

“I wanted us to have a future.”

“What if your future isn’t mine?”

He looked at her through the screen.

“Then we have to admit it.”

Neither spoke.

Sophie cried.

So did Adrian.

After four years, it seemed ridiculous that love could still be there while everything around it had changed.

“I love you,” he said.

“I love you too.”

“Then why does this feel like the end?”

“Because love isn’t the only thing we need.”

They stayed on the call until sunrise.

Neither wanted to hang up.

Neither knew how to continue.
