The night before the final studio review, the entire university seemed empty.
Sophie and Julian were alone in the design lab.
At 2:17 a.m., Julian handed her coffee.
“You look terrible.”
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
She laughed.
He sat beside her.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
“That’s not your nothing face.”
Sophie sighed.
“Adrian wants to stay in London.”
Julian looked down.
“Do you want him to?”
“I don’t know.”
He nodded.
“That’s difficult.”
“It feels like I’m supposed to know.”
“No.”
She turned toward him.
“How can you be so certain?”
“Because I’ve spent my whole life watching people choose what they’re supposed to want.”
His voice softened.
“You should choose what you actually want.”
They sat silently.
Their shoulders touched.
Neither moved.
For one second, Sophie wondered what would happen if she leaned closer.
Instead, she stood.
“We should finish the model.”
Julian nodded.
“Yeah.”
Neither mentioned what had almost happened.
