Caleb noticed before anyone else.
“You’ve been weird.”
Sophie looked at him.
“That’s rude.”
“You know what I mean.”
They sat outside a coffee shop.
Sophie stirred her drink.
“Adrian might stay in London longer.”
Caleb frowned.
“And you?”
“I don’t know.”
“You should tell him.”
“I don’t want to ruin what he worked for.”
Caleb sighed.
“You keep confusing honesty with cruelty.”
She looked at him.
“What about you?”
“What about me?”
“You’ve been disappearing too.”
Caleb looked away.
Sophie caught the movement.
“What’s going on?”
“Nothing.”
“Caleb.”
He smiled.
“I’m fine.”
But he wasn’t.
Neither of them knew yet that their lives were beginning to move in different directions.
That evening, Adrian called.
“I have something to tell you.”
Sophie braced herself.
“My supervisor offered me a position.”
Her heart sank.
“How long?”
“Two more years.”
She stared into the darkness.
“And what do you want?”
“I don’t know.”
That hurt more than the answer.
