Caleb had always been the person Sophie trusted most.
Until she discovered the email.
New York Production Contract — Accepted.
She stared at the screen.
When Caleb walked in, he knew immediately.
“You weren’t supposed to see that.”
“You accepted a job in New York?”
“It’s not just a job.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I was going to.”
“When?”
“When I was ready.”
Sophie laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
Caleb frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Adrian wants to stay. You want to leave. Julian wants to move through life without worrying about everyone else.”
She stopped.
“Everyone is changing.”
Caleb looked at her.
“So are you.”
“What?”
“You keep talking about everyone else changing.”
He stepped closer.
“But you’re the one who isn’t admitting it.”
Sophie stared at him.
“You want me to stay the same.”
Caleb shook his head.
“No.”
His voice cracked.
“I’m afraid you’ll stop needing me.”
That was the first time either of them admitted what was really happening.
