Graduate school was harder than Sophie expected.
The professors demanded more.
The projects were bigger.
And every mistake seemed expensive.
Adrian called whenever he could.
Sometimes they talked for an hour.
Sometimes they exchanged three messages in an entire day.
Sophie tried not to care.
Then Julian Cross joined her design studio.
He walked into class late carrying three rolled drawings, a coffee, and absolutely no concern about making an impression.
The professor assigned them together.
Julian studied Sophie’s design.
“You made it too safe.”
She frowned.
“Excuse me?”
“You’re designing a building people will admire.”
“So?”
“Make one they’ll remember.”
Sophie stared at him.
“You don’t know me.”
“I know your design.”
For some reason, that annoyed her.
And intrigued her.
Over the next week, Julian challenged every assumption she made.
He wasn’t trying to replace her ideas.
He was trying to reveal the ideas underneath them.
For the first time in months, Sophie forgot to check her phone.
When she finally looked, there were three messages from Adrian.
Miss you.
Call me when you’re free.
Everything okay?
Sophie looked across the studio.
Julian was drawing something on the window with a marker.
She smiled before she realized she was smiling.
Then she deleted the expression from her face.
