Nobody Told the New Nurse Which Patient to Avoid—So She Healed the Mafia Boss First
Chapter 2
At 2:17 a.m., Nora heard the alarm.
She ran toward Room 417.
Adrian was sitting halfway upright.
His IV line had been cut.
Blood covered the sheets.
Nora rushed toward him.
“Don’t move.”
His eyes narrowed.
“Someone came in.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
She pressed the emergency button.
Adrian grabbed her wrist.
“Don’t call security.”
“Why?”
“They’re involved.”
Nora froze.
“What?”
He stared toward the door.
“Trust me.”
She didn’t.
But she noticed something.
The security camera outside 417 was turned away from the hallway.
Someone had deliberately redirected it.
Nora pulled the emergency curtain closed.
“Hold still.”
She started another IV.
Adrian watched her hands.
“You’ve done this before.”
“Not on mafia bosses.”
His eyebrow lifted.
“You knew?”
“Your name isn’t exactly a secret.”
He almost smiled.
“Then you should leave.”
“No.”
“You could get hurt.”
“I work in a hospital.”
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand you’re bleeding.”
She tightened the line.
“That’s enough for me.”
Adrian stared at her.
“You’re reckless.”
“You’re stubborn.”
“I’m dangerous.”
“So was the diabetic patient in Room 412 when he tried to throw his IV stand at me.”
A faint laugh escaped him.
Then he coughed.
Nora noticed something unusual.
His pupils were uneven.
She checked again.
“Have you been having headaches?”
“Yes.”
“Dizziness?”
“Yes.”
“Blurred vision?”
He hesitated.
“Yes.”
Nora looked concerned.
“When did that start?”
“After the shooting.”
She checked his neurological response.
Then noticed a small scar behind his ear.
“Did anyone scan your head?”
“Yes.”
“What did they say?”
“Nothing.”
She frowned.
“That’s not an answer.”
“They said it was fine.”
Nora looked at his chart.
No CT results were attached.
Her expression changed.
“Your scans are missing.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“That’s impossible.”
She checked again.
Nothing.
Someone had removed them.
Nora understood.
“Someone wants you to stay sick.”
Adrian stared.
She looked toward the hallway.
“Your care team is compromised.”
He nodded slowly.
“I told you.”
Nora lowered her voice.
“Who is trying to kill you?”
“My cousin.”
“Why?”
“Money.”
“Of course.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You’re surprisingly calm.”
“I’m not.”
She continued checking his vitals.
“I’m just busy.”
Then footsteps sounded outside.
Nora froze.
The door opened.
Dr. Marcus Bell entered.
He was Saint Mercy’s surgical director.
“Nurse Bennett.”
“Yes?”
“What are you doing here?”
“His IV was cut.”
Marcus glanced at Adrian.
“Leave it to me.”
Nora shook her head.
“No.”
He looked surprised.
“He needs surgery.”
“No, he needs a CT first.”
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“You’re a new nurse.”
“And you’re avoiding his neurological symptoms.”
Silence.
Adrian watched both of them.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Be careful, Nurse Bennett.”
Nora didn’t move.
“You’re threatening me?”
“I’m advising you.”
He walked out.
Adrian looked at her.
“You’re going to get yourself killed.”
Nora sighed.
“Maybe.”
Then she looked at him.
“But you’re going to die if nobody questions anything.”
Adrian studied her face.
For years, people had lied to him because they wanted something.
Power.
Money.
Fear.
This woman wanted nothing.
She didn’t even seem impressed by him.
Before he could speak, she noticed a small scar on his hand.
A burn mark.
Three letters.
N.B.
She frowned.
“What’s that?”
Adrian immediately covered it.
“Nothing.”
But Nora had seen the reaction.
That scar meant something.
And the next morning, she would discover exactly what.
