Nobody Told the New Nurse Which Patient to Avoid—So She Healed the Mafia Boss First
Chapter 14
Five years later, Room 417 no longer existed.
Saint Mercy had renovated the entire wing.
The old room became part of the foundation’s rehabilitation center.
A small plaque hung outside.
For every patient who was once told they were too dangerous to save.
Nora had chosen the words.
Adrian hated plaques.
He secretly loved that one.
He and Nora were married.
Emma was thirteen.
Daniel worked with the foundation.
Helen lived nearby.
The Cole empire was gone.
In its place stood businesses that operated legally.
No hidden accounts.
No private prisons.
No threats.
No fear.
Adrian still had enemies.
But now they were mostly tax attorneys.
Nora said that was progress.
One evening, Adrian came home late.
Nora was sitting on the porch.
“You’re late.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
He handed her a cup of coffee.
“I had to stop somewhere.”
She tasted it.
“Terrible.”
He smiled.
“Some traditions should never die.”
She laughed.
Then he sat beside her.
“I got a letter.”
“From who?”
“Saint Mercy.”
Nora frowned.
“They want you to give a speech.”
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“You changed the hospital.”
“I was nearly murdered there.”
“Exactly.”
He smiled.
“What kind of speech?”
“About second chances.”
He looked at her.
“I don’t deserve to talk about those.”
Nora shook her head.
“That’s why you should.”
He took her hand.
“You know what I remember most?”
“What?”
“That first night.”
“The coffee?”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“You weren’t afraid.”
“I was terrified.”
“You didn’t look it.”
“I was focused.”
“On me?”
“On the bleeding.”
He smiled.
“Same thing.”
She laughed.
Then Emma called from inside.
“Mom! Dad! Dinner!”
Nora stood.
“Come on.”
Adrian stayed seated.
She turned.
“What?”
He looked at her.
“Nothing.”
“What?”
“Just thinking.”
“Dangerous.”
He smiled.
“You still make fun of me.”
“Every day.”
He stood.
They walked inside.
And for once, Adrian Cole wasn’t afraid of tomorrow.
