Nobody Told the New Nurse Which Patient to Avoid—So She Healed the Mafia Boss First

Chapter 13

Emma had discovered an old box in the attic of the family estate.

Inside was a letter addressed to Adrian.

Not from Marcus.

From Adrian’s mother.

Adrian read it slowly.

My son,

If you are reading this, you finally know the truth.

He continued.

His mother knew Marcus was dangerous.

She knew Adrian would eventually inherit the organization.

She also knew one person might save him.

Helen Bennett.

Trust Helen.

Adrian looked at Nora.

Then read the next line.

And trust her daughter.

Nora’s heart pounded.

His mother had known about her.

Before Nora had even met Adrian.

She had arranged a secret pact with Helen.

If Adrian ever became trapped inside the family empire, Helen’s daughter would remind him that he was still human.

Adrian stared at Nora.

“Your mother knew my mother.”

Nora nodded.

“They were friends.”

The letter continued.

Adrian, power will convince you that everyone wants something from you.

One day, you will meet someone who wants nothing.

When that happens, don’t run.

Adrian stopped reading.

His eyes filled with tears.

Nora touched his hand.

“She knew.”

“Yes.”

“She knew you’d meet me.”

“Apparently.”

Nora smiled.

“That sounds impossible.”

“Not anymore.”

They sat quietly.

Then Adrian looked at the final line.

If you ever love her, don’t make her pay for your past.

He closed the letter.

Nora looked at him.

“I don’t have to.”

“You already know.”

“Yes.”

He took her hand.

“I love you.”

Nora smiled.

“I know.”

“You do?”

“You’ve been staring at me for months.”

He laughed.

“Fair.”

Emma came running downstairs.

“Daddy!”

Adrian stood.

“What?”

She hugged him.

“I found another thing.”

“What?”

She handed him a small key.

“Grandma said it opens the old office.”

Adrian frowned.

“What office?”

“The one nobody uses.”

Nora looked at him.

“Should we?”

Adrian smiled.

“Definitely.”

The office was hidden behind a bookshelf.

Inside was a safe.

The key opened it.

There were documents.

Photographs.

And one final ledger.

Not financial.

Medical.

Names of every injured person Marcus had hidden in private clinics.

Patients.

Doctors.

Nurses.

Victims.

Evidence.

Adrian looked at Nora.

“We can help them.”

“Yes.”

They spent the next months identifying survivors.

Paying medical bills.

Finding families.

Funding treatment.

Adrian turned what remained of his fortune into a medical foundation.

It was named after his mother.

Helen became the foundation’s first honorary adviser.

Nora became its medical director.

Emma grew up knowing exactly what her father had been.

Not a hero.

Not a monster.

A man who had made terrible choices and then spent the rest of his life trying to make better ones.

One evening, Adrian and Nora stood outside Saint Mercy.

The hospital lights glowed behind them.

He looked at Room 417.

“Do you remember the first night?”

Nora smiled.

“You told me to leave.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You were rude.”

“I was bleeding.”

“You were still rude.”

He laughed.

Then he looked at her.

“You saved me.”

She shook her head.

“You saved yourself too.”

“No.”

He took her hand.

“You made me want to.”
