Nobody Told the New Nurse Which Patient to Avoid—So She Healed the Mafia Boss First

Chapter 12

Two weeks later, Adrian was discharged.

He returned to the hospital one morning.

No guards.

No expensive suit.

Just jeans and a dark sweater.

Nora looked up from the desk.

“Why are you here?”

“Follow-up.”

“You’re early.”

“I wanted coffee.”

She smiled.

“There is a cafeteria.”

“I don’t like their coffee.”

“You’re impossible.”

“So I’ve heard.”

She handed him a cup.

He took it.

“Terrible.”

“You’re welcome.”

He smiled.

They walked through the hospital together.

People stared.

Not because Adrian was feared anymore.

Because the newspapers had begun telling a different story.

The mafia empire was gone.

Adrian had turned over assets.

Paid restitution.

Funded victims’ families.

And publicly admitted his role in the criminal organization.

It wasn’t enough to erase the past.

But it was a beginning.

Nora found him in the rehabilitation wing later that day.

“You’re helping patients?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I know what it feels like to have no one.”

She smiled.

“That sounds familiar.”

He looked at her.

“Your mother.”

“Yes.”

“I found something.”

He handed her an envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Helen Bennett.

Standing beside a young Marcus Cole.

And a little Adrian.

Nora stared.

“What is this?”

“My father kept it.”

“Why?”

“She saved me when I was twelve.”

Nora looked shocked.

“From what?”

“An overdose.”

He explained that Helen had discovered Marcus was secretly drugging Adrian to keep him dependent.

She treated him.

Saved him.

Then helped his mother escape.

That was why Marcus never trusted her again.

Nora’s eyes filled with tears.

“My mother saved you.”

“Yes.”

“And then she saved your mother.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Marcus let her live?”

“He didn’t.”

Nora froze.

“What?”

“He tried to kill her.”

“But she’s alive.”

Adrian nodded.

“She escaped.”

Nora sat down.

Her entire childhood had been built around the belief that her mother was dead.

Now she knew the truth.

A woman entered the room.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Holding a cane.

Nora looked up.

The woman stopped.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Nora.”

Nora couldn’t breathe.

“Mom?”

Helen smiled.

“I am so sorry.”

Nora ran to her.

They hugged.

Years of grief dissolved into tears.

Adrian stepped away.

Giving them privacy.

Later, Helen told Nora everything.

She had lived under protection.

She hadn’t been allowed to contact Nora because Marcus threatened to kill her.

She had watched her daughter grow from a distance.

She had known about Adrian.

She had known about Emma.

And she had prayed Nora would never become involved.

But she had always known something else.

“Adrian is not like his father,” Helen said.

Nora looked toward him.

“No.”

Helen smiled.

“You know why?”

“Why?”

“Because you made him choose.”

Nora frowned.

“I didn’t.”

“You did.”

Helen touched her face.

“You showed him there was another way to live.”

Nora looked at Adrian.

He was standing near the window.

Watching Emma play in the garden.

For the first time, he looked peaceful.

That evening, he walked Nora home.

“I owe your mother everything.”

“She says you saved her too.”

Adrian laughed softly.

“Maybe we saved each other.”

Nora looked at him.

“That’s dangerously romantic.”

“I know.”

He stopped.

“I’ve been waiting.”

“For what?”

“Your discharge.”

She laughed.

“I’m not a patient.”

“Exactly.”

He leaned closer.

“This time, can I kiss you?”

Nora smiled.

“Yes.”

Their first kiss was quiet.

No cameras.

No guards.

No danger.

Just two people standing under a streetlight.

But as they pulled apart, Adrian’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked at Nora.

“It’s Emma.”

“What happened?”

Adrian’s voice became tense.

“She found something.”
