Chapter 8

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

Victor survived.

But before the ambulance carried him away, he whispered something to Emma.

“Your father trusted the wrong person.”

Emma leaned closer.

“Who?”

Victor closed his eyes.

“Your mother.”

Emma stepped backward.

Margaret looked devastated.

“No.”

Alexander immediately stepped between them.

“Don’t jump to conclusions.”

But Emma couldn’t stop thinking about the sentence.

Her mother had known about the notebook.

She had known about the cemetery.

She had known Daniel survived.

There was too much.

Back at the apartment, Emma confronted her.

“Tell me what you did.”

Margaret began crying.

“I didn’t betray your father.”

“Then why did Victor say your name?”

“Because I was the one Daniel told to hide him.”

Emma froze.

“What?”

Margaret opened an old suitcase.

Inside were letters.

Dozens.

All addressed to Emma.

All written in Daniel’s handwriting.

Emma grabbed the first one.

My little girl,

If you are reading this, your mother has kept her promise. I am alive, but I cannot come home.

Emma’s vision blurred.

She read the next line.

Black Orchid has people everywhere. Even people I once trusted.

Another letter explained the plan.

Daniel had faked his death because Adrian had threatened Emma.

He had spent years collecting evidence from a hidden location.

He had been waiting for the network to expose itself.

But there was a problem.

The evidence was incomplete.

The missing piece was the memory card stolen at the cemetery.

Alexander read the letters.

“Where was he?”

Margaret shook her head.

“He never told me.”

Emma turned another page.

A sentence was underlined.

When the foreigner speaks your daughter’s language, trust him.

Emma looked at Alexander.

Her father had planned this.

The restaurant.

The Russian.

Everything.

Then Emma noticed another detail.

At the bottom of the letter was an address.

A small coastal village.

Alexander read it.

“Your father may still be there.”

Emma stood.

“We’re going.”

Alexander nodded.

But before they could leave, his phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then said:

“Don’t move.”

He hung up.

Emma stared.

“What happened?”

Alexander looked at her.

“The hotel manager was found dead.”

Emma’s blood ran cold.

“Why?”

“He had one message written on his desk.”

“What message?”

Alexander’s voice was quiet.

“Tell Emma Carter to stop looking for her father.”
