Chapter 6
They barely made it back to the secure apartment.
At 11:58, someone knocked.
Three times.
Emma stared at Alexander.
“No one knows we’re here.”
“I know.”
Another knock.
Alexander moved silently toward the door.
He checked the security camera.
His face changed.
“It’s your mother.”
Emma rushed forward.
Alexander stopped her.
“Wait.”
On the screen stood Margaret Carter.
Emma’s mother.
She was crying.
Emma couldn’t understand why Alexander looked suspicious.
“She’s my mother.”
“I know.”
“Then let her in.”
Alexander opened the door but remained between them.
Margaret stepped inside.
The moment she saw Emma, she embraced her.
“Oh, sweetheart.”
Emma held her tightly.
“Mom, what happened?”
Margaret pulled away.
“You found the notebook.”
Emma froze.
“How did you know?”
Margaret looked at Alexander.
He understood immediately.
“You knew.”
Margaret nodded.
“I knew your father was investigating something. I didn’t know how deep it went.”
“Did you know about Uncle Victor?”
“Yes.”
Emma’s face hardened.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because your father made me promise.”
“Promise what?”
“To keep you alive.”
Margaret reached into her purse.
She removed an old photograph.
It showed Daniel, Margaret, Victor, and another man.
Emma stared.
She recognized the fourth man.
“That’s the hotel owner.”
Alexander took the photograph.
“No.”
Margaret shook her head.
“He isn’t the owner.”
“Who is he?”
“He is Adrian Cross.”
Alexander went pale.
Emma noticed.
“You know him.”
“He disappeared six years ago.”
Margaret nodded.
“He was the financial architect behind Black Orchid.”
Emma’s stomach dropped.
“Then why is he in my father’s photograph?”
Margaret looked toward the window.
“Because your father believed Adrian was his friend.”
A car stopped outside.
Margaret’s face drained of color.
“He found us.”
Alexander moved to the window.
Three black vehicles.
Men stepped out.
“Take the back stairs,” he said.
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”
Alexander looked at her.
“You know where the evidence is.”
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
“I do.”
Emma stared.
“Where?”
Margaret whispered:
“Your father’s grave.”
Emma’s heart stopped.
