Victoria Lane eventually came to Natalie.
She looked exhausted.
“I owe you an apology.”
Natalie didn’t invite her to sit.
“What do you want?”
“I was using Daniel.”
Natalie remained silent.
“His company was collapsing.”
Victoria explained the scheme.
Daniel had been desperate to protect himself.
She had convinced him that Natalie would destroy his reputation if he married her and then exposed his financial problems.
It had all been manipulation.
Natalie felt no satisfaction.
Only sadness.
“He ruined my life because he was afraid.”
Victoria nodded.
“And because he was weak.”
Natalie looked at her.
“What happened to him?”
“He’s being investigated.”
Natalie closed her eyes.
She had wanted the truth.
Now she had it.
That evening, she told Alexander everything.
He listened.
Then asked:
“Are you okay?”
She thought about it.
“Yes.”
“Really?”
Natalie smiled.
“For the first time, I think I am.”
Alexander kissed her forehead.
