Alexander never asked what happened.
Natalie told him anyway.
“He wanted me back.”
Alexander went still.
“What did you say?”
“No.”
A slow smile appeared.
“Good.”
She laughed.
“You sound relieved.”
“I am.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because I don’t know what I’d do if you chose him.”
Natalie’s smile faded.
“Alexander.”
He stepped closer.
“I know I’m not supposed to say this.”
She waited.
“But I love you.”
There it was.
The truth he had hidden for years.
Natalie’s heart raced.
“How long?”
He smiled sadly.
“Long enough to know I shouldn’t pressure you.”
She looked down.
“I’m not ready.”
“I know.”
He stepped back.
“I’ll wait.”
“Why?”
“Because you waited two years for a man who didn’t deserve ten minutes.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
He didn’t touch her.
He simply stood there.
And somehow, that made her want to move closer.
