She returned to the hotel.

Then her earrings.

She placed the engagement ring on the table and stared at it.
Lily sat beside her.
“I can stay.”
Natalie nodded.
“Please.”
There was a knock.
Lily opened the door.
Alexander Sterling stood outside.
Natalie looked up.
She hadn’t spoken to him in months.
“What are you doing here?”
“I wanted to make sure you were safe.”
“I’m fine.”
He looked at the ring on the table.
“No, you’re not.”
She looked away.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you?”
He was silent for a moment.
“Because five years ago, I watched you choose him.”
Natalie frowned.
“What?”
“I thought you were happy.”
“I was.”
He looked at her.
“Today proved you weren’t.”
Natalie’s eyes filled with tears.
“Why are you saying this now?”
“Because I’m tired of pretending I don’t care.”
She stared at him.
Alexander stepped back.
“You don’t have to answer anything.”
Then he left.
Natalie watched the door close.
For the first time that day, she wondered whether there had been someone who saw her more clearly than Daniel ever had.
