Her Husband Left Her to Die—Then the Mafia Boss Made Her His Untouchable Queen
Chapter 9
Daniel returned six months later.
He appeared outside the foundation office.
Elena recognized him immediately.
She stopped walking.
He looked thinner.
Older.
Broken.
“Please.”
She said nothing.
“I need to talk.”
“You had years.”
“I know.”
“You left me to die.”
“I know.”
“You tried to kill me.”
“I never wanted—”
“You bought the insurance.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I was desperate.”
“You were selfish.”
“Yes.”
“Why are you here?”
He handed her a folder.
“Victor has something.”
“What?”
“Proof.”
“Of what?”
“Everything.”
He looked at her.
“Victor was behind the crash.”
Elena’s eyes narrowed.
“Daniel…”
“I thought if I helped him, he’d erase my debt.”
“And instead?”
“He ordered me to kill you.”
Silence.
“I couldn’t do it.”
Elena stared at him.
“You left me there.”
“I couldn’t pull you out.”
“You didn’t try.”
“I was afraid.”
“You walked away.”
Daniel started crying.
“I’ve hated myself every day since.”
Elena felt no satisfaction.
Only sadness.
“What proof?”
Daniel handed her the folder.
Inside were recordings.
Victor discussing the crash.
The life insurance policy.
The murder order.
Everything.
Luca arrived.
Daniel stepped back.
“I know what he is.”
Luca looked at him.
“And?”
“I know he loves her.”
Daniel looked at Elena.
“She deserves better than me.”
Luca didn’t answer.
Daniel walked away.
Elena watched him disappear.
“Do you forgive him?”
Luca asked.
“No.”
“Do you hate him?”
“I don’t know.”
She closed the folder.
“But I don’t want to carry him anymore.”
Luca nodded.
“That is enough.”
They turned toward the foundation.
But neither noticed the black car parked across the street.
Inside sat Victor.
Watching.
Waiting.
