Her Husband Left Her to Die—Then the Mafia Boss Made Her His Untouchable Queen

Chapter 5

The next morning, Elena received a visit from a detective.

His name was Michael Grant.

He had been investigating Daniel for months.

“You should know something,” he said.

“What?”

“Your husband wasn’t acting alone.”

Elena looked at Luca.

Michael noticed.

“I know who he is.”

“Then you know this isn’t simple.”

“No.”

Michael opened a folder.

“Daniel owed money to several people.”

Luca’s expression hardened.

“One of them was Victor Romano.”

Elena recognized the name.

“Who is he?”

Luca answered.

“A rival.”

Michael nodded.

“Victor wanted access to a shipping company controlled by Luca.”

Daniel had been working there.

“He was supposed to steal records,” Michael continued.

Elena frowned.

“Why would Daniel need to kill me?”

“Because you discovered something.”

“What?”

Michael looked at her.

“Three months ago, you found a set of financial documents.”

Elena thought.

The basement.

A box.

She remembered.

“I found suspicious transfers.”

“Yes.”

“I gave them to Daniel.”

“And he gave them to Victor.”

Elena’s stomach turned.

Michael continued.

“The documents contained evidence of money laundering.”

Luca’s face darkened.

“Where are they now?”

“Victor has them.”

Elena looked at Luca.

“What happens now?”

Luca stood.

“Now I take them back.”

Michael shook his head.

“Don’t start a war.”

Luca stared at him.

“The war already started.”

After Michael left, Elena asked:

“What are you going to do?”

“Nothing yet.”

“Why?”

“Because if Victor thinks I’m angry, he’ll expect me to attack.”

“And you’re not?”

Luca looked at her.

“No.”

“What are you planning?”

He smiled.

“Something worse.”

That night, Elena learned what Luca meant.

He didn’t attack Victor.

He dismantled him.

One company lost a contract.

Another had its accounts frozen.

A third discovered that investors had suddenly disappeared.

Within forty-eight hours, Victor’s financial network began collapsing.

No shots.

No blood.

Just pressure.

Elena watched Luca work.

She realized his real power wasn’t violence.

It was patience.

“You could have killed him,” she said.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because death ends a conversation.”

He looked at her.

“I want him to answer questions first.”

Elena smiled.

“You’re terrifying.”

“I know.”

“But you’re also protecting me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Luca paused.

“Because when I found you on that road…”

He looked away.

“You reminded me of someone.”

“Who?”

“My mother.”

Elena waited.

“She was left alone when she needed someone.”

He looked back at her.

“I won’t let that happen again.”
