Elena woke three days later.
The first thing she noticed was the ceiling.
White.
Clean.
Too expensive.
The second thing she noticed was the man sitting beside the window.
Luca.
He wasn’t looking at her.
He was reading something on his phone.
Elena tried to move.
Pain shot through her ribs.
Luca immediately looked up.
“Don’t.”
“Where am I?”
“My private clinic.”
“I can’t afford—”
“You aren’t paying.”
Elena stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because you’re alive.”
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
Luca stood.
“You’ve been unconscious for three days.”
“What happened?”
“You survived the crash.”
“And my husband?”
Luca’s expression became cold.
“He survived.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Relief came first.
Then anger.
“He left.”
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
“I told you.”
“You saw him.”
“I saw him walk away.”
Elena swallowed.
“Why?”
Luca didn’t answer immediately.
Then he placed a phone on the bedside table.
“There was a camera near the road.”
He played the footage.
Elena watched.
The car was overturned.
She was trapped inside.
Daniel crawled out.
He stood.
He looked back.
Then he walked away.
Elena watched herself inside the wreckage.
She watched Daniel disappear.
Her face became numb.
“Why would he do that?”
Luca turned the phone off.
“That’s what I’m trying to understand.”
Elena looked at him.
“You know something.”
“I know your husband had financial problems.”
She froze.
“What?”
“He owed money.”
“How much?”
“More than he could repay.”
Elena’s heart sank.
Daniel had always told her the business was struggling.
He had promised everything would be fine.
Luca continued.
“He borrowed from people who don’t forgive debt.”
“Who?”
“People who work for me.”
Elena stared.
“You’re saying Daniel owed you?”
“Yes.”
“Then the accident…”
“Wasn’t an accident.”
The room went silent.
Elena’s breathing became shallow.
“Why would he try to kill me?”
Luca looked at her.
“He didn’t expect you to survive.”
She covered her mouth.
For years, she had defended Daniel.
Even when he became distant.
Even when he stopped answering questions.
Even when money began disappearing.
She had believed stress had changed him.
Now she realized something much worse.
He hadn’t simply abandoned her.
He had left her there because he believed she was worth more dead than alive.
Luca stepped toward the door.
“Rest.”
“Wait.”
He turned.
“Why are you involved?”
His eyes hardened.
“Because Daniel didn’t just betray you.”
He paused.
“He betrayed me.”
