Her Husband Left Her to Die—Then the Mafia Boss Made Her His Untouchable Queen
Chapter 12
Two years later, Elena stood in front of a new community center.
The building provided legal assistance, emergency housing, and medical support for women escaping abusive relationships.
It was funded by Luca.
But his name wasn’t on it.
Elena had insisted.
“This isn’t about you.”
“I know.”
“Then why did you donate?”
“Because you asked.”
She smiled.
“You’re getting better.”
“At what?”
“Listening.”
He laughed.
Their wedding had been small.
No newspapers.
No politicians.
No mafia spectacle.
Just family.
Sofia cried through the entire ceremony.
Daniel didn’t attend.
He had disappeared from Elena’s life after the trial.
Not because she hated him.
Because some doors didn’t need to be reopened.
Luca had never asked her to forget.
That was one of the reasons she loved him.
One evening, Elena found him sitting alone.
“You’re thinking too much.”
“I do that.”
“What about?”
“My old life.”
“Do you miss it?”
“No.”
“Then why think about it?”
“Because I want to remember how far I’ve come.”
She sat beside him.
“You know what I remember?”
“What?”
“The road.”
Luca looked at her.
“The rain.”
She smiled.
“The black car.”
“And me?”
“You.”
“What do you remember?”
Elena thought.
“I remember being terrified.”
She looked at him.
“Then I remember you saying someone should have helped me.”
Luca smiled.
“And now?”
“Now I know why you stopped.”
“Why?”
“Because you recognized something in me.”
“What?”
“A person who deserved another chance.”
Luca kissed her forehead.
“And you gave me one too.”
