He Burned 40 Years of Brush Behind the Barn — Then Stone Steps Appeared in the Ash
Chapter 1
Why were there stone steps beneath a pile of weeds no one had touched for forty years?
Thomas Whitaker stood behind his barn with a shovel in one hand and a long iron rake in the other, staring at the blackened ground.
The fire had burned through the last of the brush before sunrise.
For decades, his father had forbidden anyone from clearing that corner of the property. Thomas had never questioned it. There had always been thorn bushes, dead vines, fallen branches, and tangled roots covering nearly half an acre behind the barn.
His father had called it useless land.
Now it was gone.
Thomas dragged the rake through the ashes.
Something struck iron.
Clang.
He stopped.
Again.
Clang.
He pushed aside the gray ash with his boot.
A pale edge appeared beneath the soil.
Stone.
He dug faster.
Another stone emerged.
Then another.
Within minutes, Thomas was staring at the top three steps of a narrow staircase disappearing into the earth.
The air suddenly smelled of wet stone.
He knelt.
At the bottom of the steps was a wooden door.
It was old, swollen with age, and covered in blackened vines.
But there was something carved into the stone beside it.
A small mark.
Thomas knew that mark.
It had belonged to his grandfather.
And beneath it were four words that made his hands go cold.
Do not trust your father.
