Emily became one of the youngest CEOs in the industry.
Alexander remained beside her.
But he never treated her success as something he had given her.
He told everyone:
“She built it.”
Emily knew the truth.
She had.
But he had given her something equally important.
Space to build.
One evening, she asked:
“Why did you never try to change me?”
Alexander looked puzzled.
“Why would I?”
“People usually do.”
“Then they choose the wrong people.”
She laughed.
“You’re very sure of yourself.”
“Yes.”
“Arrogant.”
“A little.”
She kissed him.
They sat by the fireplace.
Emily looked at an old photograph.
Her first wedding.
Daniel beside her.
She stared at it.
Alexander noticed.
“Do you want to keep it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because it was part of my life.”
He nodded.
“I never want you to erase your past for me.”
She smiled.
“That’s one reason I love you.”
“And the other?”
“You’re annoying.”
He laughed.
Then Emily received a call.
Daniel.
She answered.
“Hello?”
“I’m calling about your foundation.”
“What happened?”
“I’d like to donate.”
She smiled.
“How much?”
“Enough to make a difference.”
She understood.
He wasn’t trying to impress her.
He was helping a cause he believed in.
“Thank you.”
“No need.”
“Daniel?”
“Yes?”
“I’m proud of you.”
Silence.
Then:
“Thanks.”
The call ended.
Emily looked at Alexander.
“He’s changed.”
“Yes.”
“So have I.”
Alexander smiled.
