A Little Girl Whispered, “Can My Mom Come Get Warm Too”—And My Whole Winter Changed
Chapter 8
Love didn’t solve everything.
Emma still had bad days.
I still had fears.
Lily still worried that I would disappear.
One evening, she asked me directly.
“Are you going to leave?”
I looked at her.
“No.”
“Promise?”
I smiled.
“I’ll be here as long as you’ll have me.”
She hugged me.
Then she whispered,
“Good.”
Emma watched us.
Later, she said,
“You’ve become her family.”
I smiled.
“I think she became mine first.”
She kissed me.
That was the night we stopped pretending our relationship was temporary.
Months passed.
I proposed in the café.
Not in front of customers.
Not with cameras.
After closing.
I placed the ring on the same table where Lily had first done her homework.
Emma cried.
“You planned this?”
“Yes.”
“Why here?”
“Because this is where everything started.”
She laughed through her tears.
“You’re impossible.”
“I know.”
She said yes.
We planned a small wedding.
But there was one problem.
Emma was afraid.
Not of marriage.
Of happiness.
She had spent so long surviving that she didn’t know how to live without fear.
I understood.
So I told her,
“We don’t have to rush.”
She looked at me.
“You’d wait?”
“I already am.”
She smiled.
Then she kissed me.
The wedding was six months later.
Lily was the flower girl.
My mother traveled across the country.
Emma’s mother was gone.
But a framed photograph sat on the front row.
Emma carried a small charm that had belonged to her.
When she reached me, she whispered,
“She would have liked you.”
I smiled.
“I hope so.”
“She would.”
We said our vows.
Simple ones.
No promises of perfection.
Only honesty.
“I choose you,” I said.
Emma smiled.
“I choose you too.”
Lily hugged us afterward.
“Now we’re really a family.”
Emma cried.
So did I.
