A Little Girl Whispered, “Can My Mom Come Get Warm Too”—And My Whole Winter Changed

Chapter 11

Ten years after that first winter, Lily was twenty-three.

Emma was thirty-nine.

I was forty-six.

The café had become a small regional brand.

But Emma cared more about the foundation than the business.

She helped create winter shelters.

Emergency rental assistance.

Job placement programs.

Transportation support for single mothers.

She knew exactly what people needed because she had once needed the same things.

One afternoon, Lily returned home from law school.

She sat with us at dinner.

“I want to join the foundation.”

Emma smiled.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I’ve seen what it does.”

She looked at me.

“And because I know where it came from.”

I smiled.

“Then you’re hired.”

Emma laughed.

“You’re not the boss of the foundation.”

“I know.”

Lily smiled.

“You two are impossible.”

That evening, Lily asked Emma a question.

“Do you ever regret needing help?”

Emma thought.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because it showed me who stayed.”

She looked at me.

“And who I wanted to become.”

Lily nodded.

Then she asked,

“Was Dad the first person who stayed?”

Emma smiled.

“Yes.”

I reached for her hand.

She squeezed it.

That night, after Lily went upstairs, Emma stood by the window.

“You changed my life.”

I smiled.

“No.”

She looked at me.

“Then what did I do?”

“You let me into it.”
