A Little Girl Whispered, “Can My Mom Come Get Warm Too”—And My Whole Winter Changed
Chapter 9
The year after our wedding was the happiest year of my life.
The café became busier.
Emma grew more confident.
Lily became a teenager.
And our home finally felt complete.
Then one March morning, Lily came home with a letter.
She had been accepted into a competitive school program.
It required her to move to another city.
Emma panicked.
“You’re too young.”
“Mom.”
“It’s too far.”
“It’s one state away.”
“That feels far.”
I watched them argue.
Then Lily looked at me.
“What do you think?”
I took a breath.
“I think you should go.”
Emma turned.
“What?”
“She has an opportunity.”
“But—”
“We can visit.”
Lily smiled.
Emma looked hurt.
Then she understood.
“You’re right.”
Lily hugged her.
That night, Emma sat beside me.
“You knew I’d be scared.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Because you love her.”
She smiled.
“You’re too good at this.”
“At what?”
“Being family.”
I kissed her forehead.
“You taught me.”
She looked at me.
“What do you mean?”
“When we met, I thought I was helping you.”
She smiled.
“I was helping you too.”
I nodded.
“More than you know.”
Then she took my hand.
“I think that’s what love is.”
“What?”
“Making room.”
I smiled.
“For what?”
“For someone else’s life.”
She rested her head against me.
And I realized she had become the person who taught me how to love.
