A Little Girl Whispered, “Can My Mom Come Get Warm Too”—And My Whole Winter Changed
Chapter 7
Our relationship changed after that.
Not quickly.
Not dramatically.
Just quietly.
Emma stopped thinking of me as someone helping her.
She began thinking of me as someone beside her.
We worked together.
Ate together.
Spent weekends with Lily.
Sometimes the three of us went hiking.
Sometimes we stayed home and watched movies.
Sometimes nothing happened.
And those ordinary days became my favorite.
Then Emma received an offer from another company.
A better salary.
Full benefits.
A management position.
She brought it home.
“I got a job offer.”
I smiled.
“That’s great.”
“You sound disappointed.”
“I’m not.”
She frowned.
“You’re not?”
“No.”
“You don’t want me to leave?”
“I don’t.”
She looked surprised.
“But you still want me to take it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I want you to build your own life.”
She was silent.
“What if that life doesn’t include you?”
I looked at her.
“Then I’ll be proud of you anyway.”
Her eyes softened.
That evening, she declined the offer.
Not because of me.
Because she realized she wanted to build something at the café.
She became operations manager.
Within months, the café expanded.
Emma handled everything.
Suppliers.
Staff.
Finances.
Customer experience.
She was brilliant.
One evening, I found her asleep at her desk.
I covered her with a blanket.
She woke.
“You’re still here.”
“So are you.”
“What time is it?”
“Midnight.”
She looked embarrassed.
“I fell asleep.”
“I noticed.”
She smiled.
“I like this job.”
“I know.”
She looked at me.
“You know what I like more?”
I waited.
“This.”
She gestured toward the café.
“The people.”
Then she looked at me.
“You.”
My heart skipped.
I didn’t answer immediately.
Neither did she.
Finally, I said,
“You know I love you.”
She smiled.
“I think I do.”
“No.”
I reached for her hand.
“I mean it.”
She looked at me for several seconds.
Then whispered,
“I love you too.”
It wasn’t dramatic.
No music.
No flowers.
No perfect moment.
Just two people in an empty café after midnight.
And somehow, that made it better.
