A Little Girl Whispered, “Can My Mom Come Get Warm Too”—And My Whole Winter Changed
Chapter 10
Five years passed.
Lily was eighteen.
She had graduated high school and started college.
Emma was thirty-four.
I was forty-one.
The café had grown into three locations.
Emma managed all of them.
I spent more time with the foundation we had created.
We funded food programs and temporary housing during winter.
Our first project was simple.
Every cold night, anyone could come into one of our cafés and get something warm without being questioned.
The idea came from Lily.
She remembered.
“Can my mom come get warm too?”
That sentence had changed everything.
One evening, Emma and I visited one of the new locations.
A young mother stood outside with a child.
The girl was shivering.
Emma froze.
I looked at her.
She already knew.
We opened the door.
“Come inside.”
The woman stared.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
The little girl smiled.
Emma crouched beside her.
“Would you like hot chocolate?”
The child nodded.
She looked at her mother.
“Can Mom come too?”
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
She looked at me.
“This is why.”
I nodded.
That winter, our cafés provided thousands of warm meals.
No questions.
No judgment.
Just warmth.
Emma became known for the program.
Local newspapers interviewed her.
She hated the attention.
She always said,
“I was once the person who needed a warm place.”
People were surprised.
She never hid it.
She told the story honestly.
Not to gain sympathy.
To make sure nobody else felt ashamed.
One night, after an interview, she came home exhausted.
I made tea.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“Do you remember the first night?”
“Every detail.”
“The snow?”
“Yes.”
“The coat?”
“Yes.”
“The soup?”
“Yes.”
“The little girl?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“Your life changed.”
“So did yours.”
“No.”
She leaned against me.
“Mine started.”
