A Little Girl Whispered, “Can My Mom Come Get Warm Too”—And My Whole Winter Changed

Chapter 12

Fifteen years after that winter, Emma was forty-four.

I was fifty-one.

Lily was twenty-eight.

She was now a lawyer specializing in housing and family law.

The foundation had grown nationally.

But every winter, we returned to the original café.

We kept the same corner table.

The one where Lily had first sat with hot chocolate.

One December evening, a new employee asked why the table had a small brass plaque.

I explained.

“This is where everything changed.”

The employee smiled.

“Because a little girl asked for hot chocolate?”

I nodded.

“Because she asked for her mother to come inside too.”

The employee looked at Emma.

“She was the mother?”

Emma smiled.

“Yes.”

The employee stared.

“You built all of this?”

Emma shook her head.

“We did.”

That night, after closing, Emma and I sat at the table.

Snow fell outside.

“Do you ever think about what would have happened if you hadn’t opened the door?”

“Yes.”

“What do you think?”

“I don’t know.”

She looked at me.

“Me neither.”

I reached across the table.

“But I know what happened because you did.”

She smiled.

“You mean because I asked.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Because you trusted me.”

She looked down.

“I almost didn’t.”

“I know.”

“You were a stranger.”

“So were you.”

She laughed.

“And now?”

“Now you’re my wife.”

She smiled.

“And your business partner.”

“And my best friend.”

She leaned closer.

“Good answer.”
