A Little Girl Whispered, “Can My Mom Come Get Warm Too”—And My Whole Winter Changed
Chapter 6
The court eventually rejected Michael’s claim.
He had no legal basis to demand Emma’s money or custody beyond what the existing agreement allowed.
He disappeared from their lives.
Emma finally breathed again.
She hugged me outside the courthouse.
“It’s over.”
“Yes.”
She closed her eyes.
“I can breathe.”
I smiled.
“You were breathing before.”
“Not like this.”
Lily ran toward us.
“We won?”
Emma laughed.
“We did.”
Lily hugged both of us.
It was the first time she had done that.
The moment felt strangely natural.
Like something that had happened before.
That evening, I made dinner for them.
Lily wanted pancakes.
Emma wanted soup.
So we made both.
We sat around the kitchen table.
Lily looked at us.
“You two should get married.”
Emma nearly choked on her soup.
“Lily!”
“What?”
I laughed.
“She has a point.”
Emma stared at me.
“Don’t encourage her.”
I smiled.
“Never.”
After dinner, Lily went upstairs.
Emma stayed in the kitchen.
“You didn’t have to cook.”
“I wanted to.”
She dried a plate.
“This feels…”
“What?”
“Normal.”
I knew what she meant.
She had spent years afraid of normal disappearing.
“Good.”
She smiled.
Then she asked,
“Why are you really helping me?”
I took a breath.
“I think you know.”
She looked at me.
“Say it.”
I smiled.
“You’re important to me.”
She stared.
“And Lily?”
“She’s important to me too.”
Emma looked away.
“What happens when you get tired of us?”
“I won’t.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I know myself.”
She shook her head.
“I’ve been left before.”
“I know.”
“And I don’t want Lily to go through that again.”
“She won’t.”
“How can you promise?”
I didn’t.
“I can’t.”
She looked at me.
“But I can choose you today.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Today?”
“And tomorrow.”
She smiled.
“That sounds terrifyingly sincere.”
“It is.”
She laughed.
I reached for her hand.
This time, she took mine first.
