Sophie Vale had always believed promises were supposed to be simple.
You say what you mean.
You mean what you say.
And when life becomes difficult, you remember what you promised.
On the night before Adrian Cole left for London, they sat on the roof of Sophie’s apartment building beneath a clear Los Angeles sky.
Four years together.
Two years apart.
It sounded manageable.
At least that was what Sophie kept telling herself.
Adrian held her hand.
“Two years,” he said.
“Two years.”
“And then I come home.”
“You’ll come home.”
He smiled.
“You’ll still be here.”
Sophie looked at him.
“Where else would I be?”
He kissed her forehead.
Across the street, Caleb Mason shouted from the sidewalk.
“Are you two going to say goodbye forever, or are we getting pizza?”
Sophie laughed.
Adrian shook his head.
“Your best friend is going to save me from loneliness.”
“He thinks he’s saving me from you.”
The next morning, Adrian left.
Sophie watched his plane disappear behind the clouds.
She expected sadness.
Instead, she felt strangely calm.
They had a plan.
Plans made distance feel smaller.
That afternoon, Adrian called from the airport.
“One more thing.”
“What?”
“My professor thinks there may be a chance to extend my research placement.”
“For how long?”
A pause.
“I’m not sure.”
Sophie stared through the window.
“How long?”
“Maybe another year.”
She closed her eyes.
Two years suddenly didn’t feel so simple.
