4 Months Before It Happened, He Built a Secret Underground Shelter

Chapter 4

Daniel returned to the main shelter.

Sophie was waiting.

“What did you find?”

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

He checked every camera.

Every ventilation line.

Every entrance.

Then he locked the main door.

“There is another tunnel beneath us.”

Sophie stared.

“What?”

“I didn’t build it.”

“Then who did?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel pulled out his old laptop.

He opened the files he’d saved before losing access to his former employer’s system.

The black-circle symbol appeared repeatedly.

He had always assumed it was associated with the emergency protocol.

Now he realized it was something else.

It was a project designation.

PROJECT BLACKLINE.

Daniel opened the documents.

Most were encrypted.

But one file wasn’t.

It contained a map.

He zoomed in.

The shelter appeared on the map.

So did dozens of other locations.

Daniel’s face went pale.

There were shelters everywhere.

Not public shelters.

Private underground facilities.

All connected by underground tunnels.

Sophie watched him.

“Dad?”

Daniel whispered:

“This isn’t just one shelter.”

“What is it?”

“A network.”

He found another document.

It contained dates.

October 17.

October 18.

October 19.

Then a final date.

October 21.

Next to October 17 was one word:

ACTIVATION.

Next to October 21:

PURGE.

Daniel’s hands went cold.

“What does purge mean?”

“I don’t know.”

But he did.

Or at least he had an idea.

The emergency systems weren’t designed simply to protect people.

They were designed to decide who was allowed to survive.

Daniel remembered Martin’s warning.

They were isolating the population.

Then something caught his attention.

A second list.

Names.

Hundreds of them.

Executives.

Scientists.

Government officials.

Military officers.

Engineers.

Daniel searched the list.

His own name appeared.

DANIEL MERCER — STATUS: NONCOMPLIANT.

Sophie looked at him.

“Why is your name there?”

Daniel closed the laptop.

“Because I found out too much.”

Then they heard a sound.

A metallic vibration.

Coming from beneath the floor.

Daniel grabbed the flashlight.

The sound grew louder.

Something was moving through the underground tunnel.

Sophie whispered:

“Someone’s coming.”

Daniel nodded.

He grabbed the emergency crowbar.

The hidden hatch began to shake.

Then stopped.

A voice came through.

“Daniel.”

He recognized it.

Martin.

But Martin was supposed to be dead.

Daniel approached the hatch.

“How are you alive?”

Martin replied:

“Because they wanted me to lead them here.”

Daniel stepped back.

“How many?”

“Seven.”

“Armed?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Maybe five minutes.”

Daniel looked at Sophie.

Then at the shelter.

Four months of work.

Four months of preparation.

And now the very people he had been preparing to escape from were standing beneath his feet.

Martin’s voice came again.

“Daniel.”

“What?”

“You have to destroy the shelter.”

Daniel stared at the hatch.

“Why?”

“Because this shelter isn’t designed to protect you.”

A pause.

“It’s designed to trap you.”
