4 Months Before It Happened, He Built a Secret Underground Shelter
Chapter 6
The tunnel was narrow.
Water dripped from the ceiling.
Daniel held the flashlight while Martin led the way.
Sophie stayed between them.
Behind them, voices echoed.
“They’re following!”
Daniel looked back.
“Keep moving.”
The tunnel divided.
Martin turned left.
Daniel stopped.
“How do you know where you’re going?”
“I’ve been here before.”
“When?”
“Years ago.”
Daniel stared.
“You knew about this network?”
“I helped design part of it.”
Daniel’s anger surged.
“You worked for Blackline?”
“Not willingly.”
“Then explain.”
“I was recruited after I developed emergency infrastructure systems.”
Martin continued walking.
“I thought I was building disaster shelters.”
“What changed?”
“I discovered the real purpose.”
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“And you stayed?”
“At first.”
Martin stopped.
“I tried to expose them.”
“They killed everyone on my team.”
Daniel said nothing.
“I disappeared.”
“Until now.”
“Until now.”
They continued.
The tunnel suddenly opened into a large underground chamber.
Daniel shone the flashlight around.
Rows of empty rooms.
Medical equipment.
Beds.
Metal doors.
Sophie looked terrified.
“What is this place?”
Martin answered:
“A detention facility.”
Daniel looked at the walls.
“This is under the town.”
“Yes.”
“How many?”
“Thousands.”
Daniel’s stomach turned.
Then he saw something.
A digital clock.
It displayed:
OCTOBER 16 — 23:47
Daniel looked at Martin.
“Today?”
Martin nodded.
“Yes.”
“We’re hours away.”
“From what?”
Martin didn’t answer.
Instead, he pointed toward a large screen.
A countdown had begun.
06:13:21
Six hours.
Daniel stared.
“What happens when it reaches zero?”
Martin whispered:
“The network activates.”
Suddenly, every screen in the facility turned on.
A woman’s face appeared.
Eleanor Vale.
Daniel recognized her from the documents.
She was the CEO of one of the country’s largest defense contractors.
She smiled.
“Welcome, Daniel.”
Daniel stepped back.
“How does she know I’m here?”
Eleanor continued:
“You have spent four months preparing for the event.”
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
“You’ve been watching me.”
“We’ve been watching everyone.”
The screen displayed satellite images.
Cities.
Highways.
Airports.
Power stations.
Then a map of the country.
Thousands of red dots appeared.
Eleanor smiled.
“Tomorrow, the public will experience a coordinated infrastructure collapse.”
Daniel whispered:
“You’re going to cause it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the existing system is unsustainable.”
Daniel stared.
“You’ll kill people.”
“Some.”
Sophie grabbed his hand.
Eleanor continued:
“But others will survive.”
Daniel understood.
Blackline had selected who would survive.
Eleanor looked directly at the camera.
“And you, Daniel, were never supposed to be one of them.”
The screen went black.
The countdown continued.
05:58:03
Martin looked at Daniel.
“We have less than six hours.”
Daniel looked around the facility.
“Then we stop them.”
Martin shook his head.
“How?”
Daniel looked toward the underground network map.
“There has to be a control center.”
Martin nodded.
“There is.”
“Where?”
“Under the city.”
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Then that’s where we’re going.”
