They returned to the upper level.
The duplicate was gone.
Blood marked the floor.
Daniel followed the trail.
They found him near the control room.
He was standing.
His wound had been treated.
Daniel raised the crowbar.
“Stop.”
The duplicate smiled.
“You need me.”
Daniel nodded.
“I do.”
“Then you understand.”
“You have the director’s biometric authorization.”
The duplicate nodded.
“Yes.”
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Why?”
“Because the director ordered me to bring you to him.”
“Where?”
The duplicate smiled.
“The surface.”
Daniel realized the director didn’t want to kill him underground.
He wanted Daniel alive.
Maybe he needed him.
“Why?”
“Because only you can activate the final system.”
Daniel stared.
“The purge.”
The duplicate nodded.
“You’re the final authorization.”
Daniel’s stomach turned.
The director had designed everything around him.
The shelter.
The emergency network.
The false warnings.
Even his own investigation.
They had allowed him to discover the truth.
They needed him to complete the system.
Daniel looked at Sophie.
He understood.
The shelter hadn’t been his idea.
It had been part of their plan.
They had watched him.
Guided him.
And waited.
Martin whispered:
“Daniel, don’t do it.”
The duplicate laughed.
“You already have.”
Daniel looked at the system.
The countdown continued.

Daniel smiled.
“Then we don’t need the director.”
The duplicate’s expression changed.
“What are you doing?”
Daniel grabbed the biometric reader.
He connected it to the terminal.
Martin connected his own device.
The system recognized both.
TWO ENGINEERS DETECTED.
Daniel pressed the failsafe.
The system began shutting down Blackline’s control network.

The duplicate lunged.
Martin tackled him.

Daniel exhaled.

But the countdown hadn’t stopped.
The physical event was still scheduled.
Daniel looked at Martin.
“What now?”
Martin shook his head.
“The event can still happen.”
“How?”
“Someone has to manually trigger it.”
Daniel looked toward the surface.
“The director.”
Martin nodded.
“He’ll be waiting.”
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
“Then we find him.”
