4 Months Before It Happened, He Built a Secret Underground Shelter
Chapter 10
They reached the surface just before dawn.
The city looked normal.
That was the terrifying part.
People were driving.
Stores were opening.
Children were walking to school.
Nobody knew what was coming.
Daniel checked the time.
5:42 A.M.
Less than an hour remained.
They headed toward the industrial facility from the original satellite photograph.
The building was surrounded by security vehicles.
Martin recognized the director’s car.
“He’s here.”
They entered through a service entrance.
Inside, they found dozens of computers.
The facility was preparing for the final activation.
Daniel searched the network.
The central command screen appeared.
FINAL MANUAL ACTIVATION: 06:00.
Martin whispered:
“Fourteen minutes.”
Daniel looked around.
“We need to stop the physical trigger.”
They found it in the main control room.
A large red switch.
Daniel approached.
A voice spoke behind him.
“Don’t.”
Daniel turned.
Martin Hayes.
His former supervisor.
Alive.
Calm.
Smiling.
Daniel stared.
“You.”
Martin nodded.
“You were always the smartest engineer I had.”
“You lied to me.”
“I protected you.”
“You tried to kill millions.”
Martin’s expression hardened.
“I tried to save civilization.”
“By destroying it?”
“You don’t understand the numbers.”
Martin pointed toward the screen.
“Resources are collapsing.”
“Climate systems.”
“Energy.”
“Food.”
“Population.”
“The world cannot sustain itself.”
Daniel shook his head.
“So you decided who deserves to live.”
Martin smiled.
“Someone has to.”
Daniel looked at the countdown.
“Not you.”
Martin raised a gun.
Sophie screamed.
Martin said:
“Walk away.”
Daniel stepped toward him.
“No.”
“You have your daughter.”
“Exactly.”
Martin’s eyes narrowed.
Daniel continued.
“You want me to believe you’re saving children while you’re threatening mine.”
Martin hesitated.
Daniel noticed.
That hesitation was enough.
Martin turned toward Sophie.
Daniel moved.
He struck Martin’s wrist.
The gun fell.
Martin tackled him.
They struggled.
The countdown reached one minute.
Martin crawled toward the trigger.
Daniel grabbed his leg.
“Stop!”
Martin screamed:
“You can’t stop what comes next!”
Daniel pulled him away.
The countdown reached ten seconds.
Nine.
Eight.
Seven.
Daniel slammed the emergency shutdown.
Six.
Five.
Four.
Three.
Two.
One.
The system went dark.
Silence.
Nothing happened.
The event had been stopped.
Daniel collapsed against the wall.
Sophie ran to him.
“Dad!”
He hugged her.
“We’re okay.”
Martin lay unconscious nearby.
For the first time in four months, Daniel felt the tension leave his body.
But then the facility’s last screen flickered.
A message appeared.
PHASE ONE ABORTED.
Daniel stared.
Then another message.
PHASE TWO REMAINS ACTIVE.
Martin opened his eyes.
He whispered:
“You stopped the wrong system.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
Martin smiled weakly.
“The shelter network.”
Daniel’s face went pale.
Thousands of shelters remained occupied.
And their doors had just locked.
