Chapter 3
Daniel stood motionless.
Martin’s voice came again.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
“Where are you?”
“Outside.”
“Why are you telling me not to open the door?”
“Because I’m not alone.”
Daniel looked at Sophie.
She was terrified.
He moved closer to the communication hatch.
“Who’s with you?”
Martin hesitated.
Then whispered:
“They’re looking for the shelter.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“You called me last night.”
“I shouldn’t have.”
“Martin—”
“Daniel, you were right.”
The words echoed through the shelter.
“You were right about the facilities.”
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“What did you find?”
“They aren’t failures.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Martin’s voice cracked.
“You don’t understand.”
“What?”
“They’re shutting down deliberately.”
Daniel stared at the floor.
“Why?”
Martin whispered:
“To isolate the population.”
Silence.
Daniel looked at the radio.
The emergency broadcast suddenly made sense.
Transportation disruptions.
Power failures.
Communications outages.
Everything was happening simultaneously.
It wasn’t chaos.
It was coordination.
Martin continued.
“The facilities are being shut down in sequence.”
“What happens after that?”
“I don’t know.”
“You’re lying.”
“I’m not.”
Daniel heard another sound.
A vehicle.
Martin lowered his voice.
“They found me.”
Daniel’s heart sank.
“Martin.”
“I need you to listen carefully.”
“I’m listening.”
“Whatever happens, don’t connect the shelter to the grid.”
“I wasn’t going to.”
“And don’t turn on the external ventilation.”
“Why?”
“Because they’ll be able to detect it.”
Daniel froze.
“Who?”
Martin didn’t answer.
A loud crash came through the microphone.
Then shouting.
Daniel grabbed the radio.
“Martin!”
Nothing.
“Martin!”
Silence.
Sophie started crying.
Daniel turned toward her.
“We’re okay.”
“Who was that?”
“Someone who needed help.”
“Is he dead?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
He checked the shelter’s systems.
Everything was running normally.
For the moment.
Then the lights flickered.
Daniel looked at the battery monitor.
Power usage had increased.
Something was drawing electricity from outside.
He checked the underground cables.
Nothing.
The shelter wasn’t connected to the grid.
So where was the power going?
He opened the maintenance panel.
A warning appeared.
EXTERNAL SENSOR ACTIVE.
Daniel stared.
He hadn’t installed an external sensor.
Someone else had.
He followed the cable through the wall.
It disappeared into the ground.
Daniel realized the shelter hadn’t been discovered because of his mistakes.
Someone had planted surveillance equipment during construction.
Someone had been watching him for months.
He looked at Sophie.
“Stay here.”
“Where are you going?”
“To check something.”
Daniel entered the maintenance tunnel.
At the far end, he found a second hatch.
It hadn’t been there when he built the shelter.
He opened it.
Behind the hatch was a narrow tunnel leading deeper underground.
And on the wall was a symbol.
A black circle.
Inside it were three white lines.
Daniel had seen that symbol before.
It appeared in the documents he’d copied from his former employer.
The symbol belonged to a classified emergency program.
Daniel stepped backward.
His shelter wasn’t simply a place he had built to survive.
Someone had built something beneath it first.
And now he had accidentally opened the door.
