The Single Mom Was Fired After Saving the CEO’s Father — Until the Millionaire Stepped In

Chapter 1

Megan Carter had become very good at stretching a dollar.

She could turn yesterday’s chicken into three different dinners.

She knew which grocery store marked down bread after nine at night.

She knew how to make one bottle of laundry detergent last twice as long as the label promised.

And she knew exactly how much money remained in her checking account at any given moment.

That morning, the number was forty-three dollars and twenty cents.

Her eight-year-old daughter, Lily, was eating toast at the kitchen table.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Are we going to be okay?”

Megan paused.

She was used to hearing questions like that.

Children noticed more than adults realized.

“Of course.”

Lily looked at the nearly empty refrigerator.

“Really?”

Megan smiled.

“Really.”

She reached across the table and touched her daughter’s hand.

“We just have to get through this week.”

Lily nodded.

She trusted her mother.

Megan wished she trusted life as much.

She had been a single mother for six years.

Lily’s father had disappeared before their daughter was born.

Megan had stopped waiting for him a long time ago.

She worked as a housekeeper at the Grand Sterling Hotel.

The job wasn’t glamorous.

She cleaned rooms.

Changed sheets.

Carried laundry.

Restocked supplies.

Sometimes she worked ten-hour shifts.

Sometimes twelve.

But the hotel offered health insurance.

That mattered.

Lily had asthma.

Medication wasn’t cheap.

Without the job, Megan didn’t know how she would manage.

She kissed Lily before leaving.

“I’ll pick you up after school.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

Megan took the bus downtown.

The Grand Sterling Hotel was the most expensive hotel in the city.

Its marble lobby had chandeliers, polished floors, expensive furniture, and people who never looked at the housekeeping staff.

Megan didn’t mind.

She wasn’t there to be noticed.

She was there to work.

At 9:15 a.m., she was cleaning near the main entrance when she saw an older man enter.

He walked slowly.

Elegant gray coat.

Silver hair.

No bodyguard.

He looked familiar.

Megan didn’t know why.

Then she noticed him stop.

His hand moved toward his chest.

He stumbled.

Megan dropped her cleaning cart.

“Sir?”

The man collapsed.

People gasped.

Someone shouted for security.

Megan ran toward him.

She knelt.

“Can you hear me?”

The man opened his eyes.

Barely.

Megan checked his breathing.

Then called emergency services.

“He’s conscious, but weak.”

A hotel manager rushed over.

“Move.”

“He needs help.”

“We’ll handle it.”

Megan shook her head.

“He’s having trouble breathing.”

The manager frowned.

“You’re supposed to be cleaning the lobby.”

Megan ignored him.

She loosened the man’s tie.

“Stay with me.”

The old man looked at her.

His voice was weak.

“Don’t…”

“What?”

“Don’t let them…”

His eyes closed.

Megan panicked.

“Sir?”

The ambulance arrived.

Paramedics took over.

Megan stood back.

Her hands were shaking.

The old man’s wallet had fallen beside him.

She picked it up.

Then saw the identification.

Richard Sterling.

Founder of Sterling Global.

The man’s son was Ethan Sterling.

One of the wealthiest businessmen in the city.

Megan had just saved the father of the man whose name was on the hotel.

She didn’t think about that.

She was simply relieved he was breathing.

A paramedic asked:

“Did you see what happened?”

“He walked in, stopped, and collapsed.”

“Did you give him anything?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Megan nodded.

The ambulance left.

She returned to her cleaning cart.

Her manager was waiting.

His expression was furious.

“Where have you been?”

Megan stared.

“Helping that man.”

“You abandoned your station.”

“He collapsed.”

“Security could’ve handled it.”

“He couldn’t breathe.”

The manager crossed his arms.

“You caused a disruption.”

Megan couldn’t believe him.

“Are you serious?”

“Back office. Now.”

She followed reluctantly.

Ten minutes later, she was handed a termination notice.

“Effective immediately.”

Megan stared.

“For saving a man’s life?”

“For failing to follow procedure.”

She looked at the paper.

Her hands trembled.

“At least let me finish my shift.”

“No.”

She was escorted to the staff area.

She collected her things.

A mug.

A photograph of Lily.

A cheap sweater.

A few personal items.

She placed everything into a cardboard box.

Outside the hotel, Lily was waiting with her after-school backpack.

“Mom?”

Megan tried to smile.

“I lost my job.”

Lily’s face fell.

“Are you mad?”

“Not at you.”

“Are we okay?”

Megan hugged her.

“We’ll figure it out.”

Then a black SUV pulled to the curb.

The rear door opened.

A tall man stepped out.

Dark suit.

Calm expression.

He looked at Megan.

Then at the cardboard box.

Then toward the hotel.

His voice was quiet.

“Who fired you?”

Megan stared.

“Who are you?”

The man looked at the hotel entrance.

“Ethan Sterling.”

Megan’s heart stopped.

The millionaire CEO.

Richard Sterling’s son.

The owner of the hotel.

He looked back at her.

“I saw the security footage.”

He paused.

“You saved my father.”

Megan didn’t know what to say.

Ethan took one step closer.

“Then they fired you.”

He looked toward the hotel doors.

His expression hardened.

“That’s about to change.”
