4 Months Before It Happened, He Built a Secret Underground Shelter
Chapter 7
They moved through the underground facility.
Martin knew the tunnels.
Daniel knew the systems.
Together, they made a dangerous combination.
Sophie stayed close.
The countdown continued.
05:21:47
They reached a security door.
Martin entered an old access code.
The door opened.
Inside was a control room.
Banks of monitors covered the walls.
Daniel stared.
This wasn’t simply an emergency command center.
It was a national control system.
Power grids.
Water systems.
Traffic networks.
Communication infrastructure.
Everything connected.
Martin pointed.
“That’s the central server.”
Daniel approached.
“If we shut it down?”
“Some systems fail.”
“How bad?”
“Very bad.”
“Then what?”
“We need to override it.”
Daniel studied the interface.
He realized the system was already executing commands.
The attack had been scheduled.
At midnight, the first infrastructure systems would fail.
Then the second wave.
Then the emergency broadcasts.
Then the shelters.
Daniel searched for a cancellation command.
Nothing.
“This system needs two authorization keys.”
Martin nodded.
“One belongs to Blackline’s director.”
“What’s the second?”
Martin looked at him.
“Yours.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“Your original system design was used as the foundation.”
“You said the shelter plans were fake.”
“They were.”
“But the control architecture came from your work.”
Daniel understood.
They had stolen his designs.
His credentials were still embedded in the system.
He approached the terminal.
A biometric scanner appeared.
Martin stared.
“If you access it, they’ll know.”
Daniel placed his hand on the scanner.
The system recognized him.
DANIEL MERCER — AUTHORIZED ENGINEER.
The screen opened.
A message appeared.
WELCOME BACK.
Daniel began deleting the activation sequence.
Then alarms sounded.
Martin looked toward the door.
“They know.”
Security locks engaged.
Footsteps approached.
Daniel continued.
“How long?”
“Two minutes.”
“Keep them out.”
Martin grabbed a rifle from the security cabinet.
Daniel worked faster.
The system required a second authorization.
A name appeared.
ELEANOR VALE.
Daniel searched the network.
He found a remote access channel.
He could send the cancellation command.
But he needed Eleanor’s authorization.
Then he remembered the files.
Blackline had been using a hierarchy.
Eleanor wasn’t the top.
She was one level below.
Daniel searched deeper.
A hidden account appeared.
DIRECTOR — UNKNOWN.
He opened it.
A name appeared.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Martin looked at him.
“What?”
Daniel whispered:
“I know him.”
“Who?”
Daniel turned the screen toward him.
The director was Daniel’s former supervisor.
Martin’s face went pale.
“Hayes.”
Daniel nodded.
“He’s alive.”
A message appeared.
You finally found me.
Then Martin’s phone rang.
He answered.
Martin’s own voice came through the phone.
“Daniel.”
Martin looked at the phone.
“That’s impossible.”
The voice continued.
“Come to the surface.”
Daniel stared.
The person standing beside him was Martin.
Yet someone using Martin’s voice was calling from outside.
Then the control room door began to open.
