“Your Husband Is Amazing,” the Nurse Told My Boss—She Looked at Me and Said, “I Know.”
Chapter 12
On their twentieth wedding anniversary, Ethan surprised Claire.
He took her back to the hospital.
Claire laughed.
“Romantic.”
“I know.”
“You really couldn’t pick Paris?”
“I considered it.”
“And?”
“Too expensive.”
She hit his shoulder.
They walked through the same hallway where the story had begun.
The walls had been repainted.
The waiting area had changed.
But the elevator was the same.
Ethan stopped.
“This is where you confronted me.”
Claire smiled.
“You deserved it.”
“I did.”
“You were terrible at lying.”
“I wasn’t lying.”
“You were hiding.”
“Fair.”
They reached the cardiology department.
Melissa was still working there.
She was older now.
Her hair was gray.
But her smile hadn’t changed.
She hugged them both.
“Twenty years?”
Claire nodded.
“Twenty.”
Melissa looked at Ethan.
“You’ve taken good care of her.”
Ethan smiled.
“She takes care of me.”
Melissa looked at Claire.
“Still think he’s amazing?”
Claire smiled.
“I know.”
They laughed.
Later, Ethan took Claire to a small rooftop garden overlooking Boston.
There was a table.
Two chairs.
Dinner.
Candles.
Claire looked around.
“You did all this?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“Why here?”
“Because I wanted you to remember.”
“Remember what?”
“The day you learned there was more to my life than you knew.”
Claire took his hand.
“I remember.”
“I was scared you’d leave.”
“You almost made me.”
“I know.”
“But I stayed.”
“Why?”
Claire looked at him.
“Because I realized something.”
“What?”
“I didn’t need a perfect husband.”
She squeezed his hand.
“I needed an honest one.”
Ethan nodded.
“I became one.”
“Eventually.”
He laughed.
Then he reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Claire opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
It was the first photograph Ethan had ever taken of her.
She looked at it.
“Where did you get this?”
“Your old office.”
“You kept it?”
“Twenty years.”
She smiled.
“You’re sentimental.”
“Only about you.”
She leaned closer.
“That’s dangerous.”
“I know.”
They laughed.
Then Ethan looked serious.
“Claire.”
“Yes?”
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For staying.”
Claire shook her head.
“I didn’t stay because you were amazing.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“No?”
“I stayed because you let me see who you really were.”
She kissed him.
The city lights shimmered behind them.
Neither needed to say anything else.
The secret had long since stopped being a secret.
Emily was healthy.
The hospital had changed.
Their lives had changed.
But one thing remained.
Ethan still showed up.
Every Sunday.
Every difficult day.
Every ordinary morning.
And Claire still knew exactly who he was.
