“Your Husband Is Amazing,” the Nurse Told My Boss—She Looked at Me and Said, “I Know.”

Chapter 4

Claire barely slept.

The next morning, Ethan took her to St. Vincent.

They walked through a quiet corridor until they reached a private room.

Claire stopped at the doorway.

A young woman lay beneath a white blanket.

She was thirty-four.

Her dark hair was pulled behind her ears.

A small machine monitored her heart.

She looked fragile.

But when she saw Ethan, her face brightened.

“You came.”

Ethan smiled.

“Of course.”

Then Emily noticed Claire.

She looked confused.

“Who’s she?”

Ethan looked at his wife.

“This is Claire.”

Emily’s eyes widened.

“Your wife?”

Claire smiled gently.

“Yes.”

Emily looked at Ethan.

“You married her?”

“Nine years ago.”

Emily smiled.

“She’s beautiful.”

Claire laughed softly.

“Thank you.”

Emily looked at Ethan.

“Does she know?”

Ethan nodded.

“Everything.”

Emily’s expression changed.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire sat beside her.

“For what?”

“For being the secret.”

Claire took her hand.

“You aren’t a secret anymore.”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

Ethan turned away.

Claire noticed.

She understood then.

This wasn’t a story about betrayal.

It was a story about fear.

Ethan had spent years believing that if Claire knew the truth, she would eventually leave.

So he had protected Emily by hiding her.

But he had also unknowingly placed a wall between himself and his wife.

That wall was finally coming down.

Over the next few weeks, Claire visited Emily regularly.

They talked.

They watched movies.

Emily loved old detective shows.

Claire discovered that Emily was funny.

Sharp.

Sarcastic.

And incredibly observant.

One afternoon, Emily looked at Claire and said:

“You really love him.”

Claire smiled.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he’s kind.”

Emily laughed.

“He’s annoying.”

“That too.”

“He talks too much when he’s nervous.”

“I know.”

“He thinks nobody notices when he’s scared.”

Claire looked toward the door.

“That part I know now.”

Emily smiled.

Then she became serious.

“He’s been taking care of me for so long.”

“I know.”

“He shouldn’t have to.”

Claire squeezed her hand.

“He doesn’t have to do it alone anymore.”

Emily looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you’re family.”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

She turned her face away.

Claire didn’t push.

Later that evening, Ethan drove Claire home.

“I don’t know what to say.”

“You don’t have to say anything.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

“I should have told you.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I was afraid.”

“I know.”

“Of losing you.”

Claire looked at him.

“You almost did.”

His face fell.

“But not because of Emily.”

She took his hand.

“Because you didn’t trust me enough to let me choose.”

Ethan nodded.

“I understand.”

Then his phone rang.

It was the hospital.

His expression changed.

“What happened?”

He listened.

Then went pale.

Claire sat upright.

“What?”

Ethan slowly lowered the phone.

“They found a donor.”
