“Your Husband Is Amazing,” the Nurse Told My Boss—She Looked at Me and Said, “I Know.”

Chapter 2

That evening, Claire waited.

Ethan didn’t explain.

He came home, changed clothes, made dinner, washed the dishes, and acted as if the hospital conversation had never happened.

Claire watched him from the kitchen table.

Finally, she said:

“Are you going to tell me?”

Ethan froze.

“Tell you what?”

She almost laughed.

“You know exactly what.”

He continued washing the plate.

“I told you. It was nothing.”

Claire stood.

“Then why did that nurse say you were amazing?”

Ethan turned.

“Because she thinks I’m a good person.”

“That’s not what she meant.”

“Claire…”

“She looked at me and said, ‘I know.'”

Silence.

Ethan dried his hands.

“You misunderstood.”

“No.”

“You did.”

“I’ve known you for nine years.”

His face softened.

“I know.”

“Then don’t make me feel crazy.”

“I’m not.”

“Then tell me the truth.”

He looked toward the window.

“I can’t.”

Claire’s heart sank.

“Can’t?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s complicated.”

She stared at him.

Everything suddenly felt wrong.

“Are you having an affair?”

Ethan’s eyes widened.

“No.”

“Are you sick?”

“No.”

“Are you in trouble?”

“No.”

“Then what is it?”

He didn’t answer.

Claire turned away.

“Fine.”

“Claire.”

“No.”

She walked upstairs.

That night, she slept on the couch.

At 2:17 a.m., Claire woke up.

Ethan wasn’t beside her.

She found him sitting in the dark living room.

He was holding an old photograph.

She stopped at the doorway.

“What are you doing?”

He looked up.

“Couldn’t sleep.”

“What picture?”

He turned it over.

“Nothing.”

Claire felt anger rise.

“You keep saying that.”

He sighed.

“I know.”

She walked closer.

“Who is she?”

Ethan looked at the photograph.

Claire could see only the edge.

A woman.

Maybe twenty-five.

Dark hair.

A hospital bracelet around her wrist.

“I can’t tell you.”

Claire stared at him.

“Then you need to understand something.”

He looked at her.

“If there is someone else in your life, I deserve to know.”

“There isn’t.”

“Then why are you protecting her?”

Ethan said nothing.

Claire returned upstairs.

The following morning, Ethan left early.

Claire watched his car disappear.

Then she called the hospital.

She didn’t ask for confidential medical information.

She simply asked whether Nurse Melissa was working that day.

She was.

Claire drove there.

Melissa looked surprised when she saw her.

“Mrs. Morgan.”

Claire sat down.

“I need you to answer one question.”

Melissa hesitated.

“I may not be able to.”

“Was my husband treating someone here?”

Melissa looked down.

“Yes.”

Claire’s chest tightened.

“Who?”

Melissa took a breath.

“Someone he has been helping for years.”

“Who?”

Melissa looked at Claire.

And whispered:

“His sister.”

Claire froze.

“Ethan doesn’t have a sister.”

Melissa’s expression changed.

“I think you should talk to him.”
