“Your Husband Is Amazing,” the Nurse Told My Boss—She Looked at Me and Said, “I Know.”

Chapter 10

Two years later, Emily became a patient advocate.

She worked with hospitals across Massachusetts.

Her mission was simple.

No patient should ever feel like a burden.

Claire continued working as an executive.

Ethan remained a teacher.

Their lives became ordinary again.

Almost.

Every Sunday, they had dinner together.

One evening, Emily brought a box.

“I found something.”

Ethan looked inside.

Old photographs.

One showed the three of them at the hospital.

Another showed Ethan and Emily as children.

Another showed Claire and Ethan on their wedding day.

Claire smiled.

“We didn’t take enough pictures.”

Emily laughed.

“You two were busy.”

“Doing what?”

“Arguing.”

Ethan looked offended.

“We don’t argue.”

Claire stared at him.

Emily burst out laughing.

They spent the evening remembering.

Then Emily pulled out one final photograph.

It showed Ethan at age fourteen.

He was standing beside Emily outside the hospital.

Claire looked at it carefully.

“How old were you here?”

“Fourteen.”

“You look terrified.”

“I was.”

Emily touched the photograph.

“I was too.”

Claire looked at them.

“What happened that day?”

Ethan sighed.

“My father came to take her away.”

Emily nodded.

“He told Ethan not to follow.”

“What did you do?”

Ethan smiled.

“I followed.”

Emily laughed.

“He got caught.”

“What happened?”

“My father beat him.”

Claire went silent.

Ethan shrugged.

“He survived.”

Emily looked at Claire.

“That’s when I knew he would never abandon me.”

Claire took Ethan’s hand.

“Neither will I.”

Ethan looked at her.

“I know.”

Claire laughed.

“There it is again.”

Years had passed since the nurse’s strange sentence.

But Claire finally understood why Melissa had said it.

She had seen Ethan for years.

She had watched him arrive every week.

She had seen him sit beside Emily when no one else came.

She knew the man Claire hadn’t yet fully discovered.

And Claire realized something beautiful.

Sometimes another person sees the best in the person you love before you do.

Not because they know them better.

But because they happen to witness the part of them you haven’t yet seen.

That night, Ethan and Claire walked home.

Boston was quiet.

The streets glowed beneath the lamps.

Claire slipped her hand into his.

“Do you remember the first time I heard that nurse say you were amazing?”

“Yes.”

“I thought you were cheating.”

He laughed.

“Understandable.”

“I was terrified.”

“I was too.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought you’d leave.”

Claire stopped.

“Ethan.”

He turned.

“You should have trusted me.”

“I know.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

Then she kissed him.
